*Spencer’s Gifts

While technically still around, it’s a shell of its former self. In the 80’s it was a magical place to hang out for awhile during any trip to the mall.

They are still open. We got my daughter’s crib from there last year.

I miss the old mall in my hometown. Big fountains in the middle. Baskin Robbins, Orange Julius, a large cafe, Spencers, Sears, various clothing stores, JC Penny, Babbages, and an arcade. Old men sitting on benches smoking pipes.

Now when I go back there, everything has been torn out. Just a boring carpet floor, a few cell phone kiosks, and a Belk. Rest of building is empty.

Circa 98-01, post CD and pre-e file music format, I got into the minidisc format.

Same. Minidiscs were superior to early MP3 players, and I had some equipment that would allow you to go from mp3 on computer to Minidisc. Made the high school bus ride much more tolerable. Underrated tech.

To answer the OG question, I saw a RadioShack sign on a strip mall in a small town the other day. Got excited that maybe somehow this one had survived.

It of course did not. I miss those places.

Sears for tools and lawn equipment. I still use my Craftsman push mower I bought in 1998. My first guitar was a Silvertone with the amplifier in the guitar case. Going way back before malls if I was good while Mom was shopping I got a bag of chocolate covered peanuts from the candy counter.

I was in Minden, LA about 10 years ago and they had a Western Auto.

Dayton, TX, has one as well. I kept meaning to go when I was living that way and never made it....

Not so much because I loved shopping there as a kid. I remember going in there with my grandparents in the old Palm Beach Mall. Brings back good memories.

I was having this conversation with some coworkers earlier this week. Are there even any video stores left ?
