I have seen a lot smaller buck ruin a kid. I always wondered if he killed a “normal sized”deer if he would have stuck with hunting. He never cared for it after that. It basically became a “what is the point, I’ll never kill another like it”. It was a low 170’s typical 12 barely missing the book.

Hope he sticks with it.

I think they have a different species of deer there if they are tame enough to get within 12 yards of them.

And from the pic, with a bow no less.

No, I didn't click on the link and read the story.

Moved to Ky from La. I am going to tell you that it’s a LOT harder to kill deer in Louisiana. Up here have walked within 40 yards of deer feeding on acorns, just to have them look at me and watch me sit down, then they go back to eating.
They move a lot during daylight and not nearly as wild.
Still a fine deer and a great job by this young fellow.

I killed a 172” 15 point as a 9 year old and can tell you it definitely didn’t ruin anything for me. I don’t know if I’ll ever top it, but I sure do still appreciate killing a good solid buck.

Waiting for the smartasses on here to claim that it has to be an escaped high fence deer because they know that that is the only place that deer can grow that kind of headgear.

As an aside,

quote:

French became a mentor for the two boys. He got them into the woods that fall and helped them set up a few trail cameras around the property

I love a happy ending. Sad about dad, but it worked out for everyone-boy learns to hunt, teacher gets to hunt 400 acres whenever he wants, mom has someone to keep her bed warm (probably)

Same. It was my favorite part of the article knowing the boys grew up with a solid male mentor.

Wow, what a monster.

I was driving home one evening last week, and saw something out of the corner of my eye, and it was a deer running along the road on the other side of the guard rail basically caught up to me and passed me. He ran along side me about 200 yards side by side, maybe 10 feet apart. He had a huge rack as well. He was at least an 8 point.

I finally decided I should speed up and go on before he decided to jump across the guard rail into me. I wish I could have video'd it.

A friend's dad went deer hunting for the first time at 35, 15 minutes into his first sit he killed a 120's 8 pt.

Huge at the time in North La

He had it mounted and never went back

That's about how close Native American Indian hunters would have to get for an accurate shot back in the day.
If someone is serious about it, it can be done. Kid might just be a young badass hunter.
