Looking to play at least one round while in Ireland.
First choice would be to play a course in the Dublin area, but we will be seeing the entire country so we could pass on the Dublin area and play elsewhere.
Portmarnock will be closed for a tournament.
I've seen a few recommendations saying to play the Island over Portmarnock. We are also staying near Royal Dublin.
Should we hold off and try to play one of these: St. Patrick's Links, Adere Manor, or Ballybunion

I read Tom Coyne's A Course Called Ireland earlier this year. Then I rewatched the Tourist Sauce season in Ireland. It's moved Ireland to #1 in my travel bucket list. It just seems like it would be a dream. I am very jealous of your opportunity.

Ballybunion in a heartbeat

Me too. Let’s plan a trip!

Ireland is a great trip. Took the wife and kids (10 & 11) last May. We spent 8 days in country and had an amazing time. The only thing better than the scenery was the people. A truly warm and engaging culture over there.
It was a very easy trip and not super expensive. I would recommend it very highly.
Didn't play any golf on that trip, but we did drive past Adare Manor. Holy shite that place is exquisite. Ryder Cup heading there in 2027 I believe.

That is why it jumped up our list. I was leaning to something on the coast just for the added views and elevation. But the pictures of Adere online look incredible and the added future Ryder Cup makes it a good option.

If one round, would definitely not recommend Adare. For true Irish experience, RCD would be tough to beat. Ballybunion and Lahinch are awesome courses. Old head is probably the most scenic course I’ve ever played, but also not the most traditional Links. Doonbeg is also a beautiful course.

Agree… go play a links course. Played Doonbeg this summer, absolutely amazing. Also played a park style and semi links course while I was there. Nothing compared to full links on the coast.

I was in Dublin/Howth for a sailing event and played Sutton and Howth mainly because of convenience and it scratched the itch of Irish golf. It was cooler, windy, and hard as shite.

Ballybunion is great. My favorite was Lahinch, which is close to the Cliffs of Moher.

Was there few years ago for a family vacation and managed a couple of rounds. Played The Island and County Louth (Baltray). Recommend both. The Island was considered one of the best kept secrets in Ireland, but word is getting out. It’s is a very quick trip from town.

I did Adare Manor, Old Head, Ballybunion and Waterville.
Adare Manor is awesome, but there's nothing special about the golf course.

Have gone twice to Ireland, can't wait to go back. Played Carne twice, Ballybunion, and Enniscrone. Carne is way out there but worth the trip, not just for golf. If u have just one round, I'd do Ballybunion, Royal Portrush, or RCD. Tom Watson calls Ballybunion his favorite.

Rent a car a drive to play Royal County Down! I had the great fortune to hangout with Padraig Harrington and I asked him which course is his favorite or best course and that was his recommendation. You won’t be disappointed.
My wife just hung out in Dublin for the day and I cruised up and back without a hiccup.
