I sort of get the left wing redditors who have been brainwashed into thinking Putin is modern day Hitler and this some holy war against "Fascism", and all the talking points that they have been fed.

But I am astounded how many older traditionally Republicans who are so interested in this war and the need to send all of our money towards that war.

Was listening to local talk radio (conservative) and boomers calling in were concerned about Ukraine not getting money with new leadership in the House. There are a number of them that live in neighborhood that still have Ukraine flags up, or maybe now Israel flags, and they are not left wing Democrats.

You know those could be leftists calling in pretending to be conservatives.

That happens as part of the propaganda machine.

They were raised during the peak of the Cold War. They still think Russia can push to Le Havre if the front line falls. Fulda Gap mentality.

ETA: same kinda deal with the previous generation thinking that Japan was going to rise again and go to war against the US

These are the same folks that were taught that hiding under a desk at school could lessen the impact of an atomic bomb.

Which one would you reckon cost more. WW3? Or keeping Putin busy with Ukraine? Russia cannot respond to anything going on in the middle east right now because they have their hands full. I wouldn't be so sure about that if they weren't already in a war.

Also, we are sending 25 year old equipment to Ukraine that we would have otherwise had to dispose of, it's not like we are sending our latest and greatest stuff over there unless it's for testing. Billions seems like a lot until the alternative is trillions.

edit - I'm not a boomer. I'm a 36 year old center right conservative.

Because it is the default setting of Republican to always support our government's foreign policy decisions. You know the old adage, "politics stops at the shoreline."

It's the same phenomenon with Govt agencies like the FBI. Many older Rs have a tough time actually believing that the FBI is weaponized and will only believe that there are a few bad apples.

I suspect it is old Russian sentiment from the USSR days. They are used to us being involved around the world for democracy and keeping Russia from expanding.
They've seen Russia take Georgia and Crimea and see Ukraine as being the next step as Russia will move westward after Ukraine.

I don't think they fully understand the history of how the US helped this Ukraine war along, with the 2014 coup, expansion of NATO and offering Ukraine entrance into NATO. This was a big threat to Russia. So we have had a lot of influence in Russia's actions and so has Ukraine themselves with politics and military actions against the pro-Russian territories of Ukraine.
I think too many just look at Russia = bad and must be stopped and ignore all the stuff that has been happening for 15 yrs that led to this.

Entire upbringing was surrounded by propaganda. I'm one that used to fall right in line, but Iraq war started the change in me. The last 7 years finalized it. I don't trust media or government at face value any longer.

I really don't know how big of a group this is. I don't think it's large.

But, those that fit the description above do so primarily because they believe sources that they have trusted for a long time.

Not everyone is capable of seeing past the propaganda that exists in the MSM.

Many in my age group have been raised on the idea of stopping the spread of communism anywhere and everywhere in the world so when a conflict is framed that what they support it

I come from a family with 9 siblings, all Boomers. All my siblings would be considered conservative when compared to the typical Dim/Groomer, they're all done with forever wars.

I haven’t met one person that leans conservatively who believes we should be sending money or arms to Ukraine

Are you unaware of Putin's actions in Georgia in 2008?
