Does your employer make you actually be sick to use sick time?

Talking to a friend and I had never actually been employed at a place that cared. The only difference between our vacation time and our sick time is how they accumulate. One is lump sum use it or lose it each year and the other stacks and accumulates based on time worked.

Yes and no.
On the record YES, off the record NO
My director isn't a heartless pos.

We only need a doctor note if using more than 3 days.

We don’t believe in sick leave here at the plant. You show up with a damn cold and you get the work done. Sick leave and PTO are for the weak.

I’m surprised you have time for gainful employment with all the cardio, bjj, lifting, and dog diddling

I just show up still drunk and blame my blood pressure. God invented mouthwash for a reason.

Yes. It's not additional leave time at just about any place. Enforcement is a whole other matter. For my employer, vacation accrual is based on years worked: 80 hours to start; 120 hours at 3 years; 160 hours at 10 years; 200 hours at 15+ years. A balance equal to a year's accrual can be held; after that it's automatic payout. E.g., If I have 4 years in and I have 150 hours banked at the end of the year, 120 goes into next year and you're paid out for 30 hours. Sick accrues at the same rate of 40 hours per year and the balance does not have a cap but it can't be paid out. Sick can be used for yourself or your dependents for medical, dental, or vision. It's an honor system though they could request proof of treatment. If someone were to constantly take sick time to have Friday off, that would probably get rejected unless proof was provided. A substantial difference between the two at my employer is vacation is considered utilized (billable); sick is not.
Also worked at a place where you accrued nothing but PTO. It was higher than most places but it accounts for everything: vacation, sick, and holidays.

What’s the legalities with this? I never knew that they could force you to the doctor or make you stay home or anything.

My mindset is show up to work unless you actually can’t get out of bed. A cold, headache, or some other minor illness (yes covid counts as this nowadays) is not a valid excuse. Get to work lazy bones
Eta sick time sounds like a load of crap. You aren’t getting paid staying at home being lazy cause you have a sore throat

No sick time... personal time, which can be used for any reason. Separate from general vacation time.

I work at Walmart. We just have PTO and protected PTO. Protected PTO allows you to call in sick, be excused, and get paid. You can use it whenever you want. It accrues much slower than regular PTO, which is used for vacation time and must be requested in advance. Right now I have about 124 hours of PTO available and about 24 hours of PPTO.

I went to work sick AF so I could use my “sick days” to hunt and fish.

We just have PTO, we can use it for sick time or vacation time. I don’t typically even charge my employees a PTO day if they are sick unless they abuse it.
ETA: we’re 100% remote, so it’s rare that anyone uses a PTO day because they are actually sick

About 5 years ago there was a doctor in Australia that was prescribing people go for a hike in lieu of prescribing medicine. I am hoping this catches on.
