Did/do you wear a helmet when on a pedal bike?

Wondering if this is a generational or regional/cultural thing. And some places legal

I'll go first: I'm 40 and have had a bike for 35+ years and have never owned a helmet

When my kids were young, we moved on the east coast and were shamed by those people for endangering our kids letting them recklessly ride without helmets...to the point the HOA stopped by and reminded us it was a law.

We moved back.

Nope. Never.

If he rode a real road bike with clipless pedals…he would for sure.

I Live in New Orleans with the world’s worst roads and the world’s worst drivers. Might need a helmet

i dont make my kids wear helmets. the chances of a serious head injury from a bike fall are negligibly small.

We wear helmets on BSA outings when riding, because it is required. When it is just the family/friends ... no.

Yeah but it doesn't take much to frick up your head. Wearing a helmet is a simple thing.

Don't have kids but I do ride bike for exercise regularly. I wear a helmet when I ride. I don't particularly care about looking like a dork, and usually on the trails, most people are wearing a helmet and some that don't so it's not like you stick out like a sore thumb or anything.

I'd rather look like a dork and have a lower risk that I'll have a brain injury than increase my chance at a brain injury.

But, I'm also not just casually riding a block to class at low speed.

But still possible. You only get so much brain matter. Why wouldn't you protect your head & brain. What if you catch the curb just right on your temple? It's a really simple piece of equipment to pop on in a matter of seconds.

ETA: And it's probably obvious that we wear helmets. I was formerly one of the faggy cyclist hogging up the road in New Orleans. I have seen many helmets prevent head injuries on group rides and especially in races.

so is not riding a bike. so is staying inside all day.

of all the people i've ever known in my life, thousands probably, who rode a bike without a helmet as a kid, i know precisely zero who had a head injury from a bike fall

I made my 7 year old son wear a helmet skateboarding. Since he was used to and a daredevil I stayed with that rule. He did not care and never complained about the helmet

Sadly, mine never rode much at all...so that was money well spent on bikes.

But when they were little the youngest had one of those no-peddle bikes that help them learn to steer without peddling, and he had a helmet on then.

But once they learned, nah...

this is completely reasonable. a skateboard is inherently unstable and it's not a matter of if but when you'll take a fall. i skated for awhile in middle school / high school and i always wore a helmet for that.

When I road a tri bike at 22 mph yes I wore a helmet.

When I ride my mountain bike or cruiser around at a slow speed, no I don’t

My kids have never worn a bike helmet, only when they were really young on 4 wheelers

I :kige: this. My 3 year old is already a little daredevil and our neighborhood is hilly. He is just getting the hang of a pedal bike so he puts on a helmet. It's weird because he tells me to put on a helmet that I can remember and in the sport of being a good example I put on my wife's bike helmet since I've never owned one. She thinks it's weird and has never not worn a bike helmet.

As a kid I owned 4wheelers 3wheelers and dirt bikes and never owned a helmet. She thinks I'm a retard. She could be on to something

Always wore one when out mountain biking, but not to just ride to a buddy's house as a kid.

Friend of mine broke his neck biking a couple of weeks ago and if it wasn't for the helmet he'd probably be dead.

I've never known anyone who was killed by not wearing a seatbelt but it still happens all the time.

In 2016, 424 cyclists deaths were with riders not wearing a helmet vs 137 who wore a helmet.
