Why is "Israel our greatest ally"?

I'm not anti-Israel. I am just wondering why this phrase is repeated so often. What service do they provide to America in exchange for the financial and military support America provides them?
I fully support the state of Israel to protect their country and interests by any means necessary. If anything, America should get out of the way. But I also don't see the need for our involvement.

They aren't.
We are their ally, but they are not ours.
They spy on and steal from us more than any other country on the planet.
They have strong representation in our government (many of our politicians are every bit as loyal to Israel as they are to the United States) and they are a liberal democracy in the Middle East.
That's about it.

England is our greatest ally.
Israel is in a special position because if we turned our backs on them they would be persecuted by just about the entire world right quick. As long as the US isn’t okay with mass extermination, they are good.

We have a special relationship with the UK, for sure. But to call them our greatest ally is a stretch. As long as the UK was a member of the EU, they were off the rails after the Thatcher years. They haven't really improved since BREXIT.
Our closest actual ally is probably Poland at this point. Like Israel, they're under an existential threat from other nations that causes them to dispense with useless simp speak, they want to pay for more tanks, arty, etc.
