Ryan Yaites Alignment in Dime Formation vs Mizzou [2 images]

With Sage Ryan moving from Nickel to Boundary Corner in the Mizzou Game, Ryan Yaites stepped in as the 5th Defensive Back. We would, then, naturally refer to his position as the Nickel. However, most of the time his assignment was to play the Dime, while Harold Perkins managed the Nickel role from his Sam LB position.
Here are two examples:
1. Yaites is lined up like a Free Safety or a Deep Rover, and Harold Perkins is the Field-Sam LB. During the Spring Game, LSU was bringing in a Rover/Spy LB between their Will and Mike, but I have not seen that formation at all during the regular season.
2. Yaites is lined up in the traditional location of the Nickel (Field-Side Safety), and Harold Perkins is moved from his typical Field-Sam location to play on the boundary side of the formation.

I’m a little surprised Toviano isn’t in that role.

Matt House should be fired just for this and Brian Kelly should be questioned about it every week.
Yes I know he had an INT last week. Harold Perkins still should be on the edge at least 85% of the time.
Watching Missouri line up Luther Burden in front of Harold Perkins made me want to throw my tv into a river

BK said that HP was playing “trail” coverage underneath the Slot (at least for his interception). I don’t know what HP’s assignments were the rest of the game. But from what I understand, they use DB/LB combos to bracket WRs either inside and outside or over and under. If HP we’re trying to guard any team’s WR1 solo, he might as well just blitz.

He’s not a pure edge rusher. Half of his sacks last year were from spying the QB and pushing when he get out of the box. He needs to learn how to cover. Not just for NFL but for college. Devin White was a hell of an odd rusher but he did way more than that.

quote:HE IS NOT BIG ENOUGH!!! He is literally 210lbs and cannot be a 3 down edge player!! You need to get this thought out of your head!! He has to develop other skills to stay on the field. He has to drop in coverage sometimes to play nickel/outside LB. He is the size of a safety. He has to learn to play like one.

Perkins could likely cover better than all or most of our LBs, but Penn can often be found 30 yards downfield
When we’re fortunate enough to stuff a run on 1st and get an incompletion on 2nd, our DBs lineup 12 yards off the outside receivers, then backpedal on the snap, allowing the receiver to stop past the marker and receive the ball, still 5 yards from being contacted by an LSU DB
This happened on multiple occasions
I really have no idea what I’m witnessing outside of blown coverage or complete lack of trust in basic abilities by our staff
It is prevent coverage on every and all occasions. I have nothing but apathy towards rewatching any of it, which was something I have always done

Thank you. The people screaming at the beginning of the year to just line Jim up on the edge every play donr know football.
He gets washed out way too much at his size.
They still aren't using him right though. Use him on a delayed blitz.
Devin white was great at this
Perkins needs to be used as a secondary pass rusher way more than he is.

Yaites is way to tentative to being thrown into the action, but I guess we have no one else. Toviano is much more aversive, but I guess he doesn’t know the scheme yet.

If you take away the Arkansas game and the 4 sacks he had in that game, his stats aren’t all that great, I think he has 2 sacks this year. People want to compare him to people like Parsons, but he is way smaller than guys like that.

I would love to get an insiders update on Toviano. Guy looked like a stud coming out of high school.

And blitz bluff that drops in to coverage.

Perkins finds ways to make plays, he worms thru D's like JD5 does O's

From the Grambling game through Ole Miss HP played a lot of edge. He had one sack and couldnt get off of blocks very well. We also lost containment frequently. HP is one of the most talented players on the field but when the other team knows your there they adjust.

I wish we had some young guys that could just play man to man

This right here!! I was very much expecting him to see the field with all the struggles we have had in the defensive backfield.

He played against Miss st and he was visibly confused pre snap and gave up a TD because of it. I think they don’t trust him to know where he’s supposed to be yet
