100 Yards & 60 Minutes of Black Power

LINK . Sharing one of my old favorite articles from Esquire magazine before the days of Danny Kanell & only P5 schools actually "created" NFL players like Prime.
" Last season 18 Grambling alumni played in the NFL/AFL, and only Notre Dame , with 26 , had more"-
FAMU (11), Southern( 9), TSU(8), Jackson State & UMES(7) & many more from HBCU'S. I curse the day Danny Kanell & p5's from the South masterminded the key to player " development " like only they can do.

You’re burying the lead. Southern University Law Center posted a 49% bar passage rate this July. The media is trying to keep such an uplifting story from the public.

I’m afraid that few, if any, could have an open and completely honest discussion of the issues raised by this article.
People want to believe the issue is 100 percent one way or the other.

That's a good Esquire article . Recommended read. The 18 players "developed" without p5 money that season:
Willie Davis(Hofer)
Willie Brown ( Hofer)
Buck Buchanan ( Hofer)
Ernie Ladd (3x all pro / 4 x pro bowl. Should be HOF)
Rosey Taylor(3x all pro )
Garland Boyette ( 2x pro bowl)
Willie Williams ( 1x pro bowl)
Nehemiah Wilson (1× pro bowl)
Clifton McNeil ( 1x All pro)
Willie Young ( 10 yrs)
Lane Howell (8 yrs)
Mike Howell ( 8yrs)
Frank Cornish( 7 yrs)
Alphonse Dotson( 7 yrs) Santana Dotsons pops
Henry Dyer( 4 yrs)
JD Garrett(4 yrs)
Jim Griffin ( 3 yrs)
Goldie sellers ( 4 yrs & several records)
6 defensive backs ( 4 all pro) . The original " DBU" I guess? Where would these young men be without the expert knowledge & development of P5/ SEC schools?

Interesting. I guess black players in the 60s weren't quite integrated with the Power 5 schools, so they went to HBCUs. Obviously blacks are more athletic than whites, and the NFL was focused on just getting the better players. Now the power 5 does recruit blacks with no problem, the dynamic has changed leaving the lesser athletic blacks going to HBCU's. Maybe it changes, but it'd be hard to see with more money being at power 5 schools that it would change.
I don't think the power 5 got players to switch from HBCU's to their teams because of player development. It was likely because they just have more money, nicer amenities, bigger/better stadium, better resources, nicer lounges/cafeterias, nicer dorms, TV contracts, public presence. More of a money thing to me than coaching.
I mean if you got an offer in 70s to play at LSU or Southern and say player and coaching talent was equal at both schools, you'd choose LSU simply for the reasons above.

quote:Yeah . Southerners typically shy away from & attempt to rewrite or downplay its horrible history & explain why over 100 HBCUs exist / were created. Discussions about " Seperate but Equal" being complete bs contrived by Supremacists was settled in 1955. It doesn't really take an urbane & Harvard educated Esquire journalist to point out that Grambling wasn't quite an Ivy League school. But this is a sports board right?

Doesn't appear that athletes needed the SEC / P5s to be " developed ".

Spot on with the last paragraph.
I remember GSU players recently refusing to show up to weight lifting because the facility was covered in mold, among other things. I don't know how Eddie Robinson did it as long as he did. Their facilities were/are terrible. Stepping on their campus was like stepping into the late 70s. Zero $$ went to improving that school/sports facilities.
I can only assume other HBCUs are the same. I mean Ed Reeds first day as HC had the team picking up trash at the stadium.

What exactly is the point of this thread? Are you upset that black kids are choosing to go to SEC schools instead of HBCUs?

His dumbass thinks HBCU’s can develop talent as well as P5 schools. His evidence are all the players from the 60’s and 70’s.

Yes. He has stated this several times before.

Maybe they should get their own house in order instead of whining about everyone else, then. HBCUs are nothing but grift factories these days. They couldn't even fricking clean Ed Reed's office for him before he showed up for his first day on the job. Why would anyone want to go there?
How long did it take for Deion's speakers to be stolen out of his truck in Jackson? How little did the school and administration care when that happened?

I never could understand why it is ok to say this.
While at the same time it is wrong to say that NFL teams hire more white coaches and GM's because white people are smarter and more intelligent than blacks as a group.

Both Reed and Sanders are Uncle Tom sellouts according to OP because they opened the curtain for everyone else to see how truly shitty things are at hbcu’s.
And because sanders left an hbcu for a power 5 school.

quote:So are the fans that believe certain athletes need them or their " exposure". Tiny Gram/ S.U. debunked this myth decades ago by routinely fielding more Pro players than Blue Blood programs. Zero exposure & massive underfunding , but the Scouts learned where they need to look. A big pet peeve of mine & a classmate ( HS assistant coach) who has had to continually convince kids that the low level g5/ FCS scholarship offers are great opportunities.

I'm fine with a an athlete impressed with the wealth , hype of big time Football, but have low tolerance for those believing that they need them. It's a myth that's been debunked already.
