Where does Steve Young rank on all-time QB list?

I was thinking about this the other day. He doesn’t have the total stats because he played in the USFL and backed up Montana for awhile, but when he was in his prime, he was really, really good. Is he top 10 all time? Top 15?
I rarely see him mentioned. He got a SB win too.

Depends on your criteria. At his peak? One game to win? He’s way up there. Him getting a relatively late start to his career as an NFL starter and “only” winning 1 Super Bowl likely won’t have him in the top 10 as far as career resumes. But I couldn’t list 10 more I’d rather have for 1 season/1 game.

As a 49er fan:
He is not top 15.
Short "actual" playing career, USFL time and sat a good while behind Joe.
Wasn't good in the big games except for 1994.
I think playing behind Joe probably was hard mentally.

Greatest peak I think I've ever seen but relatively short. He's football's version of Sandy Koufax to me. I think his lack of longevity puts him in the 10-15 range but for a short time, he played QB better than anyone I ever saw.

Top 20 all time but not top 10. Borderline Top 15, somewhere in the Favre/Brees tier.

Prolly the top 25-30 range

He is the #1 dual threat Qb of all time.

When he was at his peak, he was something. So accurate and efficient. Everytime I rooted against SF and watched Young dropping back to pass, I was like “oh shite”.

So I Wikied Steve to see just how many yards passing he wound up with (33,124) and came across a few interesting tidbits:
I knew he was a really efficient passer, but didn’t realize just how dominant he was during his time. But speaking of times, man, they are a changin’. Or have changed since he retired in ‘99. He’s now 13th. But look at this list. Almost all are still playing or just retired:
1 Patrick Mahomes 105.2
2 Aaron Rodgers 103.6
3 Deshaun Watson 101.1
4 Russell Wilson 100.3
5 Jimmy Garoppolo 99.3
6 Joe Burrow 99.1
7 Drew Brees 98.7
8 Kirk Cousins 98.1
9 Dak Prescott 97.8
10 Tom Brady 97.2
11 Tony Romo 97.1
12 Lamar Jackson 96.8
13. Steve Young. 96.8
14 Justin Herbert 96.5
15. Peyton Manning. 96.5
16 Philip Rivers 95.2
17 Kurt Warner. 93.7
18 Matt Ryan 93.6
19 B. Roethlisberger. 93.5
20 Jared Goff 93.1
As far as rushing, this is where Young ranked at the end of 2020:
2-time MVP (for comparison, since someone mentioned him earlier, Brees has none)
3-time 1st team All Pro (Brees has 1)
It depends on what you value, but if you adjust for the era he played in, his passing efficiency combined with what he could do with his legs, I think you could still make a compelling case his overall career is top 10-ish. He certainly was in his prime. I have no strong feelings to argue one way or another, but he is interesting to try to place.

Young was an extremely efficient passer – leading the league in passer rating a record six times, and completion percentage and yards per attempt five times. At the time of his retirement, he had the highest passer rating among NFL quarterbacks with at least 1,500 passing attempts (96.8)

I would rank him somewhere between Tom Brady and Jamarcus Russell.

i would say adjusted based on era he is top 10-12. he was dominant in the 90s, especially mid 90s.

Right behind Shedeur Sanders

This tells me that the modern qb pool is greatly overrated in terms of historical greatness. Talk about needing an asterisk

Whoah let’s tap the brakes there.

When he was at Tampa did people largely think he was a good QB stuck on a bad team or did they think he was just a bad QB?

I think that’s fair. Without actually taking the time to make out my list, I imagine he’d be right about there on mine, too.

His 94 season might be best of all time if adjusting based on era.

He could have played in any era. He would be deadly in the modern day RPO.
He was the highest rated passer in NFL history for years even after he retired until the modern rule changes allowed more recent QBs to pass him. Even today he’s still Top 15, and the only non-active players in front of him are Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Tony Romo.
