True Detective Season 1 is still amazing

Doing another rewatch and it just gets better every time. The more you can follow the clues, to me the more interesting it gets and they really did set out an awesome story and drop lots of easter eggs along the way.
However, there are a few nitpicks that you notice the more you watch it that get overlooked initially because of the pace of the show.
1 is when they leave the biker Ginger tied up in a ditch after abducting him from the project robbery. The biker gang seemed like a pretty vicious group. Wouldn't Ginger go after Rust for revenge? Also if Ginger ever gets picked up by the police, maybe he doesn't talk, but seems risky that he would reveal that Rust was actually operating undercover outside of the law and definitely committed several felonies as well as robbed his own evidence locker to set up the meeting
. Also not sure that Ginger would've cooperated in the bar to set up the meeting with Ledoux.
2 is that when Rust comes back from his 8 years in Alaska from 2002-2010, Billy Lee Tuttle kills himself shortly after. When we finally see the evidence locker in Episode 7 and he shows Marty the tape that proves the Tuttle cult is real and they're abducting kids, he makes it seems like he found it somewhat recently. Tuttle kills himself because the tape gets found so I guess the timeline of when exactly in the 2 years Rust is looking into the cult post-Alaska doesn't quite line up.
Overall, awesome show. I like the ending more each time I watch it even though I felt let down initially compared to the previous 7 episodes. I think it's a perfect season of television and probably will be rewatchable forever.

The clue about who the killer’s family/family ties are was given early when they show sheriff Childress at his desk with a big deer head above it. Tying the family back to the deer head on the girls dead body. The crazy lawnmower man killer was named Childress.

Ditto. Arguably the single best season in TV history. It's become cliche to hate on this show for some reason now. Of course the story isn't airtight, very few dramas are, especially murder mysteries.
The ending wasn't a let down at all for me but even if it was, what led up to it more than makes up for a let down ending.
The end of EP4 when Rust is telling about them coming over the levee and it shows them seeing the meth lab for the first time and Reggie is down there in his underwear with that mask on, and Rust says "This... This is what I'm talking about. ... dream, a dream that you had inside a locked room, a dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it."
That gives me the chills every time I watch it. What a freaking episode.

GOAT television show. I watch Season 1 about once a year.

Agree, did a rewatch about 3 months ago and MM is haunting. Incredible television.

#1 greatest 1 season of TV in history.

IIRC Reggie and Dewall Ledoux were the only cooks used by the Iron Crusader bike gang. If Ginger had any brains(debatable) he should have gotten as far away as possible as to not be connected to Rust in any way.
I LOVE that the timeline begins pre-smart phone. These guys wore suits and actually did detective work. They didn't punch in data or call for someone else to do every little piece of research.

Good point. Cloak and dagger shite for sure.

im sure this has been discussed ad nauseum in true detective circles for years, but i just watched for the first time a few months ago. i guess i know it has because what little research i did afterwards came up with countless threads and posts about it.
the breaking point/discovery/whatever you wanna call it with the green ears thing is pretty disappointing. that's really my only negative on the show, and it doesnt change the fact that it was awesome in any way

thought it was implied heavily that Cohle killed Tuttle and made it look like suicide or an accident or whatever.

The retconning and people acting like TD S1 isn’t one of the greatest seasons of television ever is a weird flex.
I know it’s sacred to LA people but I’m not in anyway tied to that and it’s amazing.

Cohle is too honest to lie about that. I think the PTB snuffed out Tuttle once they realized they might have been compromised.

No. Marty asks him straight up in episode 7 and he denies it. Says it was probably someone from the cult.

I will never forget that feeling of watching that scene .
That was absolutely masterful tv.
And everyone had to stew on it for a week until the next episode came out before everyone binged everything immediately

It was an incredible choice for them to have the gas mask dangling and then freezing like they did slowly. Just great cinematography or editing or whoever makes that choice. It was awesome.
Eta: oh and the intro is the best intro for a television I’ve ever seen. It’s a masterclass in short video editing alongside a perfect theme song.

Lots of great stuff in there, life stuff even. One thing that stuck with me was the shot of Marty noisily and grossly eating noodles that his wife made for him while she and his daughters stand there and can barely tolerate being around him. Juxtapose that shot with the later one of Marty eating a TV dinner alone in some apartment or hotel room, now separated or divorced.
With sympathy to the divorced baws here, that one shot really captures what a rough life it is to be a divorced man, stark and desolate, dismal, drab, dreary, miserable, alone.
As Marty himself puts it: "Remember what I said about the detective's curse? The solution to my whole life was right under my nose. That woman, those kids... I was watching everything else. See, infidelity is one kind of sin, but my true failure was inattention. I understand that now."
Also, he cheats on his wife again with that girl he had given money to so she could escape being a prostitute. Marty is nowhere near as bad as the criminals he chases, but how much better is he? Shades of grey.

Solid write up. The scene where the little girls are arguing over the balloon and it floats into the tree… then time fades to her being older and a typical teen getting in trouble… that scene completely resonated with me. Sometimes it seems that’s how quickly time flies by.
