Son Volt, Trace - Windfall is one of the best first songs on an album I've ever come across. Alt, definitely, alt what I guess is the question.

The most obvious and lazy answer to this question would probably be Nirvana Smells like teen spirt. Personally I would go with Dive off of Incesticide if I was going to pick a Nirvana song.

If I was going to answer your question excluding Nirvana I would probably go with Rusty Cage from Soundgarden off of Badmotorfinger.

If you want a off the wall entry and maybe one a lot of people has forgot about I would go with In the Meantime by Helmet.

A lot of great ones mentioned already. Probably my top 5:

Built to Spill- Randy Described Eternity

My Bloody Valentine- Only Shallow

Modest Mouse- Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine

Neutral Milk Hotel- King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1

The Dismemberment Plan- A Life of Possiblities

Plus one bonus one: actually came out early 2000s, but it fits in terms of sound and I think it is one of the greatest songs ever written:

Songs: Ohia- Farewell Transmission

Smells like Teen Spirit and it aint even close.

People who love to hate Nirvana will also hate this but it's undeniable.

Agree. It's overplayed, but also defined a decade and an entire rock genre. Love the Built to Spill call. That was a really good one. My Modest Mouse would have been Dramamine.

I really believe they hate their popularity more then they actually hate the band or music.

Like the bunch that loved Metallica until they signed their record deal, then they called them sell outs.

Adding this one, but I haven’t seen one mentioned yet that I don’t agree with.
