A Downtown business owner says he has had enough.

Despite assurances from DDD and Mayor Broome, the business owner is closing down his downtown shop.
Mayor Broome doesn’t tolerate crime and violence.

Zero tolerance? The same day we learned that a 30 year old man who killed his 79 year old dad, had a prior conviction. He had already been arrested for attempted murder. He pled down to second degree battery got a ten year sentence but had that sentence suspended instead he got three years probation.
WBRZ
How about that zero tolerance?

Just so you know, the mayor's office has literally nothing to do with any of these things, other than the initial arrest (via BRPD, if they were even the investigating LEO).

Ironic, this is the same guy who came in less than a year ago to try and make downtown a place for people to shop.
Here's how one business owner wants to improve downtown Baton Rouge's retail environment
Here's how one business owner wants to improve downtown Baton Rouge's retail environment
quote:
A business owner is launching a campaign to increase the number of independent retailers in downtown Baton Rouge.
James Curtis has started the Grow Downtown Retail campaign by putting up flyers at his two businesses: Plantriarch, a co-working space for artists, and Outside Stimuli, a design studio and plant shop. He’s enlisted the help of other downtown businesses and a website is set to launch Thursday.
Curtis, who moved downtown four years ago and opened a business three years ago, said he started the campaign after realizing there were only three independent stores downtown.
“We get the sense that no one is looking out for us,” he said. “We want a central city infilled by other independent retailers.”
There are three steps Curtis said he would like to see happen. The first is creating an incubator to help businesses, offering training, networking and subsidized rents. “There are so many people already here,” he said. “We have the talent, we just need it to grow.”
The second is launching a campaign to encourage people to shop downtown. One model for this are the programs that started in the early days of the COVID pandemic that urged people to buy carry-out meals from local restaurants, Curtis said. “The goal should be for people to shop out to help out,” he said.
The third is to develop the kinds of amenities that downtown residents need. While there’s no shortage of places to eat and drink in the central business district, Curtis said other things are lacking. “There’s a great running culture, but no shoe shop downtown,” he said. “There’s a dog parade, but no pet store.
With downtown recovering from the COVID pandemic, which caused a lot of employees to work remotely, and new leadership with the Downtown Development District, it's the right time for a retail campaign, Curtis said.
Whitney Hoffman Sayal, who became executive director of the DDD in June, said Curtis’ campaign is a good way to engage downtown stakeholders and let people voice their opinions about downtown retail.
Increasing the amount of retailers is one of Hoffman Sayal’s stated goals and said she hopes to launch a retail study early next year. In the meantime, Hoffman Sayal said the hundreds of new parking meters that will be installed over the next month should help.
“That’s a huge first step, in terms of getting turnover in parking and making access to the retail environment easier,” she said.

I doubt it's a successful business if he is closing it.

It took brpd 2 hours to respond to a dude breaking in through my living room window. When the cop did finally show up, he told me, in all seriousness, to call 911 if the person came back and they would be right over.
I just laughed in his face.
Oh. And the cop reported it as “simple vandalism” rather than breaking and entering.
Gotta pad the stats however you can!

This headline is like a little blue pill for so many on this board.

He believes downtown shifted after COVID-19, with fewer people visiting businesses. Curtis is also seeing bars outnumber mom and pop stores.
This is an issue in almost all cities right now.
Lockdowns were one of the most damaging things we as a society could have done, but here we are.

And we have to start seeing that these issues aren’t just sidelined to one particular race or group of people, it impacts us all,” said Curtis.
He's right in that the bullet could have hit anyone, of any skin color. But the reality he's trying to tip-toe around is the person (persons) who fired the bullets are largely confined to one group. That's not prejudice. That's facts.
It's not everyone in EBR. It's not even the majority of people who live in EBR. But EBR does have a populace, more so than most other areas in the nation, whose cultural mindset is that it is entirely normal to settle disputes by trying to kill one another with gunfire.
This isn't 80's-90's era drug sales turf wars. A lot of these shooting arise simply out of one person "disrespecting" another person on social media...or in person. And shooting that person who disrespected you is viewed as a wholly acceptable response by a certain demographic in EBR.
Build all the jails you want. Unless and until it becomes culturally unacceptable to kill another person simply over a disagreement or disrespect, not much will change. Business owners will continue to find the reward is not worth the risk to operate a business in EBR and productive, law abiding citizens will continue to chose to live elsewhere where the risk of being a victim of crime (even if still small) is far less than living in BR.
Every major city generally dies the same death. BR is just in the middle of its time compared to somewhere like Jackson, MS which has already passed. Once Kip left office so went with him the belief that Baton Rouge could be a great city where people want to live. Broome is the first, but won't be the last, of political leaders who really don't care if the city collapses...as long as their personal status increases.

I 5hink one of the biggest problem in Criminal Justice today are these plea deals. The plea deal process needs to be revised so that the original charges are left on the record and able to be used against the criminal if they commit future crimes and be used for determining future parole, probation, commutation.
The reason why is because serious crimes get reduced to much less serious crimes and future actions become based on those much less serious crimes. For instance, a person is charged with drug dealing and weapons charges. The plea deal is down to possession of narcotics, then later they release them early or commute sentences based on the low level charge of possession which does not reflect the seriousness or violent threat the person really is.

So what’s she’s admitting is that she and BRPD are too damned incompetent to stop any of it.
There’s no other option.

That’s the district attorney, not the mayor. Somehow though, that guy keeps getting elected too. Wonder why.
