I umpired one of those leagues for a few years and yeah, some people take it waaaaay too far. Most people on the teams were there just to get out of the house and be active but it seemed like every team would have 1-2 shite heads that were only there to be a menace.

My cousin was in a league he was watching me so he took me to the game and some dude on his team went crazy over a call and got tossed wanting to fight in the parking lot and shite. I was a kid thinking dam this is a rec softball leauge it is not that serious. Sure you can argue the call a bit ,but this dude wanted to fight. I sorta agree with this from what I have seen.

If youre competitive, you will be. Church league basketball was more violent and angry than adult softball.

Even playing pickup basketball people start talking shite and I can't believe what I'm hearing.

To summarize, anybody who gets emotional about what is supposed to be a fun event with friends probably needs counseling.

Any A or B level game will have this level of competitor. Most C level games have a few competitive ringers.
You never stop being competitive if you ever were. Its what dudes do. If you like relaxed games, go find a coed league.

Upper division softball is extremely competitive.
One can simultaneously be extremely competitive AND comport themselves in a professional and/or respectable manner.

Tennis can be this way too. I play mainly mixed doubles with the majority being 40+ years old. Some of the guys that solely do men’s doubles care waaaay too much about Saturday morning tennis. Seen some guys on the verge of full on fights before.

Showing displeasure at a terrible call is appropriate adult softball behavior when you play at a higher level.
These aren't your weekend warrior lawyers and pipefitters. These are dudes who played in college and above.

Tennis is a ladies sport. Softball is for baws.

I played 2-3x per week for almost 20yr. The balance of competitiveness & fun was always there. Weeknight leagues. The weekend stuff is much different

Moreso than softball IMO.
Uber competitive.

Pretty sure OP isn’t talking about guys who can be competitive and play at a higher level.
He’s talking about those guys who aren’t anywhere as good as they think they are but act like they’re a step away from the Majors. There’s definitely a type like that within competitive softball that’s insufferable.

You damn right we are. Not sit your candy arse at home while the men take the field.

I have never witnessed this behavior in state am and mid-am golf tournaments.
My brother used to play in a softball league. His team only cared about winning the beer drinking trophy.

Eh, people are fairly cordial most of the time.
I got angry when I was randomly paired with this 120 y/o (approx) female and my opponent was destroying us by hitting only to her. I finally blew up when he called my serve out after waiting until his return bounced out before doing so. (4.5 USTA whereas my partner was maybe 2.5)

upset about Texas A&M and LSU going into 7 overtimes. I remembering making a promise to myself that I'd never get upset about a game where college kids threw around a ball again in my life. Still on track with that one.
Not being down for a little shite talk in pickup basketball is low T, Reddit mod behavior
