But according to BK, LSU is a year away
Its really hard to forecast a team with the Transfer Portal and NFL draft. You just cant sit on talent and expect kids to wait their turn anymore. Kids are leaving for the highest bidder and/or playing time. There's going to be some unexpected transfers and guys entering the draft. We could literally have a position of strength turn into a position of need in one offseason.
BK could easily be in a spot where he has to replace Smith, Wingo, Speights, Guillory, Ovi, Jones, and Brooks.
Duce Chestnut or Alexander could declare with a solid season. Nobody expected Mekhi Garner to leave early.

why are we a year away? depth?
Yes.
How interpreted Kelly’s comments was they are a year away from being a Championship Contending roster from top to bottom.
This year the offense is a championship contending offense. The starting defense I think can be good enough but any injuries at LB and DB would hurt the team significantly.

I agree that we are still a year away. We need to get to a point where we are not dipping into the transfer portal to fill entire position groups (cb and dl). Can we catch lightning in a bottle, and win it all this season? Absolutely.
But in terms of stability as a program, where we are developing our own players annually, and using the transfer portal as a means to find complimentary players, we are not where we want to be.

Platitudes and cliches aside. It is still an open question whether Daniels has grown as a passer. We haven’t seen it on the field, and I don’t think the coaches have either…..yet. How much Daniels improves as a passer is the biggest qualifier Coach Kelly may be relating to. The rest of Daniels’ game is really good so with passing improvement he could be maybe the one of best we’ve ever had. If not, we’ll probably lose 2-3 games because of it.

Whether or not LSU is a year away , we will see.
I still expect them to be one of the best teams in the country.

BK knows we don’t have much depth as he would like. But it’s also a motivation tool to his team

We are literally like 4th in national title odds. Of course we can win it this year...

That’s awesome so we are going back to back!!

Mulkey thought they were a year away, too. Not saying football will win it all this year, but sometimes teams get hot and it happens regardless.

Also Stetson Bennet, Trevor Lawrence, Tua ring a bell?
All won nattys as first year starters.
I’m not saying it can’t be done but the only one you got right is Trevor Lawrence.
Stetson Bennett started 5 games in 2020.
Alabama never won a national championship in a season Tua started any game of said season at QB. Should’ve went with Mac Jones here.

He's saying LSU is a "year away" from having the complete roster he wants in terms of talent and depth. But I disagree they are a year away from competing for a National Championship because because it is not just the strength of LSU's that factors into that evaluation. You have to also take into account the competition.
LSU returns a lot of production from last season. Most notably, a 5th year QB who has started over 40 games thus far in his college career. That won't be the case next season.
The schedule is also pretty favorable for LSU this season...as have all of the "odd year" schedules over the last 20 years or so. It's not a coincidence LSU has won or played for championships in 03, 07, 11, 19. The also played in SEC championship games in 01 and 05. A big reason for that is in odd years LSU has gotten Auburn, Florida and Arkansas at home, and since 2013, Texas A&M. Yes, all of those schools have had up and down years, but I think most would agree The Swamp, JHS, and Kyle Field are some of the tougher road environments in the SEC. And for whatever reason LSU seems to struggle in Arkansas. The downside of an odd year schedule is being @ Alabama. However, that game has been an anomaly in that LSU has won more there than here.
Next season is a completely new SEC schedule. One where LSU will be at A&M, Arkansas, Florida and South Carolina. LSU loses perennial punching bag, Mississippi St, in exchange for Oklahoma. Oh, and LSU also plays USC and UCLA
Aside from the schedule, you also look at the competition. Georgia is now the class of the SEC. However, they are breaking in a new QB and new OC. Alabama is still Alabama. But, for the first time in ten years they are not the clear cut class of the SEC and they have as big of offensive issues as they've had in quite a while. That's in addition to a new OC and DC.
Florida looks awful. Auburn is rebuilding, but Freeze has produced everywhere he's coached. Now may be the best time to get them. Leach is gone (RIP) and now a Leach team has to run a non-Leach system. LSU's rotating East opponent is Missouri (picked in the bottom of the East). A&M is a wildcard, but they haven't beaten LSU in TS since joining the SEC and who the hell knows what they will look like at the end of the season.
Outside of the SEC, you have Ohio St. breaking in a new QB. Michigan should still be decent...until they have to play anyone with a pulse outside the Big 10. FSU and Clemson should be good...but they may play each other twice this year. Thrown in LSU's game vs. FSU, and the ACC may canibilize itself. USC looks like it still has USC's defense
There is never a guarantee to win a NC. But looking at this year's variables compared to next year's (anticipated) variables, I think this season provides the better chance for LSU...even if BK is right and next season may be a deeper and more talented team.

Mulkey said she was a year away also. Just saying.
Kim Mulkey is one of the best women’s coaches in history. Stupid comparison. What that team did shouldn’t be the expectation for any sport.

quote:That's exactly it. Any championship team has good depth. Not only so you can plug in quality players when starters get injured, but also to be able to rest your starters intermittently. That's the sole reason we got beat down by a&m. Our guys were simply worn the hell down by that week. You saw how different they looked in the bowl game once they'd been able to rest. I know it was just Purdue, but I also know what I saw from the Tigers. No doubt in my mind that that team could have made the Georgia game much more competitive.

Even with a guaranteed roster, like Georgia, it still uncertain.
Georgia was on the brink of failing last season. Missed Field Goal saved them.

Depth on D is a major concern. BK has talked about it several times.
Posted on 8/29/23 at 11:11 am to Dratini
The roster isn’t balanced like he knows it can be. He doesn’t want to patch positions via the transfer portal. He wants organic positional development through high school recruiting. And use the portal to supplement here & there.
He’s still in the infancy of his tenure; so that is really not even possible because he hasn’t been at lsu long enough. But it’s gone better than expected outside of a position or 2.

Hard disagree. Many teams would kill to have Nuss start for them.
He's a better QB than anyone on the Bama roster
And he didn't puss out and transfer. We're in seriously good hands at QB two deep right now
Nussmeier will be one of the more experienced QB's in the SEC next season.
I don't know about some of you guys on here; how "Defective" thoughts materialize in the brain and then make it all the way through the process to finally end up as a post on the Rant.
