Driving range at Eastlake

What is the deal with the pond? Do they just whack balls in the lake while warming up?
Posted on 8/26/23 at 1:31 pm to TDTOM
Sure did look like Morikawa was hitting wedges straight into the water lol.

Floating balls. Lot of ranges going to this. Easier to manage

I can guarantee you tour guys are not going warming up with floating golf balls. Club members, sure, but these guys are warming up with the balls they play.

No. Tour players are not hitting shitty floating balls.

I’ve played east lake a bunch, the pond is about ~100 to carry from where they normally have the mats. So yes if they are hitting less than that it’s into the water.

Each player hits the ball he plays. If I remember correctly they are then sorted and shipped to the next event. After a certain time they are donated. Not sure if that has changed.

They have a net 4 feet deep over the entire lake that catch the balls.
Ok so I made that up, but there's prob something like that.

They are redoing the range and the clubhouse immediately after this tournament. I normally play in a charity thing first week of October and it was cancelled bc of the clubhouse renovations
ETA east lake has been more of a corporate membership up until recently. I think they are shifting much more towards private individuals and with that are really focusing on the exclusivity vibe and making it more of a players club

It’s a complete course redesign and renovation. New greens, fairways, bunkers. Rees Jones drastically changed the course in the 90s and the Rees Jones/RTJ style of architecture (forced carries onto greens for instance) has really fallen out of favor. Andrew Green will restore it to the intent of what Donald Ross designed in the 30s.

Having played there, it's about a gap wedge to clear the water. If you hit it in the water, it was a bad shot or you did it on purpose.

Thanks for the article.
I love Donald Ross designed courses.

When I warm up I don’t start by hitting full gap wedges. I am dunking at 15 balls before I try to hit it past the water.

This guy really is popping up all over the place. He makes a lot of sense if you’ve ever listened to him. He seems to have both the membership and history in mind.

When they were warming up after the rain delay they were on top of each other on the range. Pretty crazy that the range at the tour championship can’t accommodate 30 guys hitting balls at once.

I have played there. Definitely not floating balls. I always hit short pitch shots before taking a full swing. The balls definitely sink.

They actually do have a net that catches balls under water. When you play out there, they ask you not to purposefully hit balls into the water. Next year after the rennovation, the lake will be gone as they are pumping it across to create a new lake on 7.

It doesn’t havent a purpose. Just was never taken out when they redesigned the course. So yes, you definitely are gonna dunk a few unless you like going full shot first out the bag. The other crappy part about the range is it is entirely uphill. Hard to get a great feel for distance if you are tour guy I’m sure.
Eastlake has tried so many times to get individual membership up but always falls back to corporate. Its location has been historically in a shite area but the last 5-7 years has seen a ton of yuppie growth and really improved. I imagine they will go around to the big execs in town and try to get individual memberships up. Last time I played there, they had about 50 members. Tom Cousins saved the place. My guess is membership initiation will start at $120k. Given that all the other private courses are at max capacities with 4-5 years wait, I could see EL getting their individual membership up.
