Boxers give you puppy energy and extreme loyalty and are trainable, they are short-haired so the shedding isn’t bad, seems to happen seasonally and you can go outside and clear their coat or bathe them and limit the amount in the house.

All they have are pits or pit mixes. frick that.
Lots of dogs on Petfinder that don't look to have any "pitbull" traits.

We got our daughter an Aussie Doodle. Not as big as golden doodle, not as hyper, sweet as he can be, smart like an Australian Shepherd & doesn’t shed!

No they don’t. I’ve saved two full blood Germans from CAA and the SPCA, along with curing them of deadly heartworms.
CAA had a 7 month old purebred husky a few days ago as well. You just have to watch social media or their foster posts to see if there’s a dog you’d be interested in who needs help

i would not recommend a basenji for a novice dog owner.
what exactly did the quiz questions go over and what was the reasoning for the basenji choice?
you also said poodle, which i do think is a relatively good dog for a novice. Easily trainable, loyal, good attitude, athletic if you are. When i say poodle though, i mean the standard poodle.
What is your tolerance for shedding? most short haired breeds dont shed like crazy, but my tolerance for shed hair might be higher and my wife and roomba like to vacuum frequently

Aussie Doodle
This is what we got back in May 2020. Ours is a toy and only weighs 6 lbs. Great dog that isn't hyper and doesn't shed (which is what I was looking for). She has been great with my 2 year old who grabs her tight and all the stuff a 2 yr old does.

Lots of dogs on Petfinder
The Petfinder filter lets you search by distance from your home, gender, size, estimated breed, and so on.
Check there before you drive to a shelter.

I have very little tolerance for shedding. I think because I said that I'm active, don't like shedding, don't like barking, and prefer medium-sized dogs, it spit out basenji. I wouldn't mind a couch potato tho. But yeah, shedding is maybe my biggest negative for what I'm looking for. Just wanted some other options other than golden doodle, since every other girl I know has gotten that.

have advice for a good breed for a first-time owner?
The dog breed will depend on your temperament and energy level. Do you want something cute that's relatively low maintenance? Perhaps a Cocker Spaniel is what you need. Do you like to jog and want to spend a lot of time working with your dog? A Boxer may be more your speed.
With some breeds, where you live may have an impact on your choice. For instance, you don't want a Huskie if you live in the South (at least not as your first dog).
Do a little research on dog energy levels and temperament. It may be that you can't find (or afford) a breed you think might be a good match but you may be able to find a mix at a local pound/shelter with a lot of what you're looking for.
Dogs are fricking great if they are matched with the right person/family.

If you want a social dog that likes to be around you get a Havanese.

Get a Lhasa Apso. They are great indoor dogs.
This. I had one for 14 years. Didn’t shed, was a people pleaser, and the sweetest dog I’ve ever owned She was a Lhasa poodle mix.
Eta: very low maintenance too

Had a basenji (technically my brother's) Great dog. Quick as all get out so you ain't catching it. But no animals came inside the fence...They couldn't react fast enough before that dog was on them. Fun.. Played a lot... Low maintenance
I've told my wife that is the breed we would get IF we ever got a dog

I appreciate all of the replies. Definitely a lot of helpful answers.
What about a bluetick coonhound for first-time owner? Found one on Petfinder not far from me. Looks like a great dog and reading up on them briefly, seems like a possible good fit.

Typically, the shorter the hair the more it sheds.

Typically, the shorter the hair the more it sheds.
Edit: Ease of training also says 1/5 (1 being easiest)

Grooming requirements are associated with brushing and hair cuts to prevent matting. Not shedding.
Short haired dogs shed too.

My shelter dog is the best dog I’ve owned. Vet thinks she’s lab / Weimaraner mix
