He will probably get the September call up, but he may not be in the show next season but it is possible.

With Crews quickly rising through the org and on pace to be in the majors next season he will likely do so without having played in two of the more high profile prospect leagues. He never played in the Cape Cod League in college. And now, given that he's in his first pro season and has already played a full college season, it's unlikely he goes to the Arizona Fall League, the "finishing school" for prospects ahead of their expected call up year.

The Nationals are pretty weak at in the outfield. Lane Thomas and Alex Call have both been underwhelming, with Call being one of the worst hitting outfielders in the league with more than 250 abs. They just called up Blake Rutherford a few days ago, and I doubt he can hold the job at all, much less keep it from Crewes.
Crews will probably be with the big club for spring training next year, and he very well could make the 40 man, and be an every day player by mid-season.

It is about contract, service time and pay manipulation. Shitty part of baseball, but that is how it goes.

Technically, both are already in The Show.

That is not as much the case anymore. The MLBPA did things to penalize teams from intentionally manipulating this system to hurt the player.

Alex Call has definitely struggled, but Lane Thomas has been pretty solid. .289 average, 20 homers, and 30 doubles is above average for sure in the mlb. He does strike out too much though

He might be in the starting lineup opening day next season. Paul Skenes might be the opening day starter for Pittsburgh in 2024.

Lane Thomas and CJ Abrams have been the Nationals best players. Lane is not a weak link but the future is definitely Dylan and James Wood as the core to the outfield moving forward.

I understand you want to develop players, but Crews and Skenes strike me as about ready made as they get. Starting them both off in rookie ball for a day just seemed like a waste.
Pro ball is a very different lifestyle that takes some adjustment. Wooden bats alone are a huge adjustment. Sometimes you need to be at the ballpark 5-6 hours before the game starts. You may have to show up with a couple of bags packed ready for a 10 game road trip and the bus leaves 45 minutes after a night game ends. You sleep and eat like shite on the road.
AA pitching is like seeing an SEC ace every single night. Getting used to the different lifestyle in Low A-ball is the smart thing to do before throwing a prospect into the fire on Day 1.

Actual play aside, there’s a period of time needed to acclimate someone into being a pro.
The system has been in place a long time and it works. Letting a guy like Crews get used to grown men throwing pitches at him before he goes up against the best of the best is just good management.
He's seen heat in college. What he hasn't seen is the sorts of breaking balls (at all speeds) that he is going to have to get used to. He'll get a taste of that in A/AA/AAA ball (although he might skip AAA).

Not just that, it's every guy out of the bullpen being better than most of the starters and almost every reliever you faced in college.
Too many people try to say that playing the SEC is equivalent to AA or even High A. There can be specific innings in specific games like that. But people discount the wide delta of talent in the SEC from Friday to Sunday or even from the 6th inning to the 7th inning.

Skenes to AA too now. Not surprising for the same reason as Dylan… which is that A ball coming to an end.

Unless one of their teams thinks they will contend next year, the earliest you will see either is mid June so the club gets the extra year on the rookie contract
