Learn me about Mini Split AC Units w/ extended line sets

Want/need to add an AC to my party room build out, preferably DIY. Optimally I’d like a mini split unit with the wall mounted interior air handler. Problem is I would want to install the outdoor compressor/condenser in my mechanical courtyard which would require approx. 100’ of line set.
I see some very cheap units available that would take care of my needs but they only come with 16’ of line set for installing the interior and exterior components basically back to back. That really isn’t an option where the AHU will be installed. I don’t see any extended line sets available for these units. More expensive units do have extended line sets available, but the line set costs as much as the unit itself.
Would those be the only options? Is it possible to build your own line set with copper tubing and insulation?
I’d like to DIY this but do have a neighbor that is a retired AC guy that could help charging my system if needed.

I recently installed a MR cool cassette style at my parents and it came with a factory 25' line set. Like you we installed it further away and went with a 75' line set, after vacuuming it down we checked the pressures and it was fine. So we Didn't have to add any, not sure that helps lol.
You should be able to fine a line set that will match the fitting size or like you said make your own with a cutter and flaring tool.

Thanks! looking at those, the cassette style is probably better for what i'm looking for. Will put some research into that. Hopefully i can make it work.

The only other thing ill add is you will need to run a drain that is sloped, I think the one we installed the pump could only handle ~18" of up hill before it had to be ran downwards with gravity. (pump outs the water from the condensation)
It was super easy to install, running the 220 from the panel to the other side of the house was probably the hardest part.

smart move using a ceiling unit, not as sightly as a wall mounted unit.
You can install a pump to help with drainage if needed.

Used the extensions sets for my mrCool. They are costly but truly DIY. I think any AC guy could extend your linesets. My drain isn't extended and comes out in another spot.

I have a drain in the wall near where the cassette will be installed so that works out. I assume I can just tap into that, right?

Jpainter, is that installed on a patio? Possibly with a roll down screen?

That is exactly what it is installed on, it the patio has two electric screens, works well.

Has the longevity of minisplits improved over the last few years? I know 3 people that had them installed about 10-12 years ago and they all crapped out within 7 years.

No idea but they've been around a pretty long time. Do you know what was wrong with them?

1) Love the ceiling cassette. Nice.
I did one for a customer. I hung it on allthread rods.
2) on the Long Lineset— you need to look in the book of the model you are considering. Look to see the maximum length allowed. If allowed, you should have a choice on lineset length. Just do the math . Example : 1 of each size @ 75’ , 1 @ 25’ each size. You will have a communication wire mid splice. Go home depot buy a 1/2” straight thru gray plastic electrical conduit connector with the removable inspection plate. Make splice in there and silicone the ends.

No but whatever it was made going to window units the best choice. They were all installed in separate structures in their backyards.

Have you found a model that can handle 100' of line? Many can't, or at least according to the manufacturer shouldn't.

I've done a non-pre charged line set install and it's not bad.
Get you a flaring kit from one of your local auto stores (O'reilly has a free rental program) and get you quality brass fittings from hardware store. You'll need a union compression fitting for each of the lines you're trying to extend. I'd never done it before and watched a few videos on Y/T and did a few practice ones on extra line set. Worked out great.
Call a tech to come charge the line after you release the gas that is in the compressor with the unit you buy. Just get a unit with common freon.

There are some. I found a chart that had about half with capability to 82’ and a few more with over 100’. I used “100’” in my op because it was the next jump past 50. I probably need between 70’ and 80’. Man, I really wish I could find a spot to stick the outside unit but I just don’t have a close spot.
