OT Parents: At what age did you start letting your kid stay home by themselves?

Currently in a “discussion” with step-kid’s mom about what age it is appropriate to leave a kid home alone for a couple of hours.
I feel like my own frame of reference is probably skewed because I was a latch key kid and was home by myself at 12 for about 2-3 hours every weekday.
Some variables:
- We live in a suburb in a low crime area with your typical security camera situation.
- The step-kid will be 15 in two months. She also has a cell phone with service for emergencies.
- Her Dad’s parents live two streets over and are able to stop by.

12 although the law was 13.

Started about 11ish for my son. My daughter, about the same.
However..... my daughter's Godfather lives 2 doors down, and my sister in law lives about 6 house away. We wouldn't let them stay home alone if neither of them were home.

12 or so for a few hours while we ran errands or whatever. It really depends on the kid though.
Me and my siblings stayed home all summer by ourselves at 8, 10 and 12 but different times and all

Probably when my oldest was about 12. But we didn’t leave the baby with her. And it was two hours max.

she is 11.5
leave her solo when she doesn’t have summer camp

Summer of 1998 I started staying by myself with my sister. I was 12, going on 13, and she was 10.

When they can ride a bike. Once they do that then they can be on their own.

My oldest was 12. My younger kids I would have had no problem leaving them at 8.

Mom is worried about her daughter being a slut. I remember girls wanting to be diddled by some of the neighborhood kids when they were left at home at 13 or 14. Glad I was able to assist.

For daughter, around 12. For boys, around 45.

She’s 14 months away from driving a car…if you can’t let her stay at home alone, how in the world can she be expected to drive in 14 months.
For me growing up I was 11 (1995).

Why are you in a discussion with her and not your husband?

I leave my kids home alone to run quick errands now and my oldest is 9. We'll probably slowly increase the length until he's 12-13 and by then it'll be a night out kind of thing.
The right time all depends on the kid(s).

10/8/5 for like 10-15 mins when my wife has a patient and I’m coming home from work. We live in a gated spot and they aren’t allowed to eat, don’t want the 10 year old having to do the heimlich.
They love it when it happens because they get to watch tv or play switch on a weekday

We let our 10 year old stay home with our 6 year old by themselves for about an hour after school. Both girls, and the 10 year old is mature enough to handle it

I gave my son his phone when he was 4. He figure out how to tweet me if he needs me at 5. That’s when we felt comfortable leaving him home alone.
