Only to learn he’s a murder suspect.
This is why you never pick up hitchhikers:

A father-son duo picked up a hitchhiker on a Georgia road this week, then later learned the foul-smelling man was wanted for murder, according to police and a report.
Russell Jimmerson was driving Tuesday morning when he spotted a stranger on the side of the road trying to hitch a ride and decided to lend a helping hand.
“He just stuck his hand out, just very quickly. I told my son, ‘Let’s get him.’ I help everybody,” Jimmerson told WXIA. “He’d been up all night, walking from Rabun County.”
Jimmerson said the 23-year-old, later identified as Keegan Phillips, had a backpack on him and absolutely reeked once he got into his truck.
The father dropped him off a short time later along the highway and then learned he had just given a ride to an alleged killer.
Jimmerson received a phone call as local residents became aware that authorities were on the hunt for a wanted man, the television station reported."
After he was told that a “guy in Rabun County” murdered someone last night, Jimmerson’s said he replied, “’Man, you won’t believe what I’m fixing to tell you. There’s a smell in this that’s awful.”
Phillips, of North Carolina, was charged with the murder after authorities arrested him without incident, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
He is being held in the Rabun County jail."

Only in Georgia would something like this happen.

Look at this trial that happened in GA a couple years ago. Dude had tattoos all over his face and tried to outsmart the judge.

That's fair
My dad(RIP) always taught my sister and me not to pick them up.
What you said definitely makes sense.

I had to hitchhike one time. My car broke down on a highway south of Autry, OK back before cell phones. There is NOTHING out there. I was hoofing it along with no idea when or if I would find a town and a guy in a no-shite creeper panel van pulled over and offered me a ride. I got in and he had a giant arse looking Rambo knife in a sheath sitting on the console between us. I couldn't figure out who was more scared in that van. He dropped me off in Autry and I used a pay phone to call a wrecker. Could have been me.

90% of the pungency is probably from his felonious ballsack. And smelly ballsack is generally a much greater offense to many of our lady folks then if we murder or maim . So keep your naughty parts fresh and shiny, boys. I recommend Happy Nuts. It’s a life saver .

I hitchhiked all through college. Once I was going to Sewannee to see a friend who went there. First ride dropped me off on Sand Mountain near Section, Al and I waited for hours for someone to pick me up.
Finally, six hours later, a farmer with a truck full of produce stopped and told me to hop in. Started talking and I said I had never had to wait so long for a ride. He replied ever since that hitchhiker killed a man two weeks ago up here folks have been avoiding hitchhikers.
Made it to Sewanee on noon the next day.

Is that a risk you’re willing to take with your son’s life?

What are you doing to them?

When I was 15 I picked up a hitch hiker. When I got close to my house I said "I gotta let you off here" and he started trying to get me to take him further. When I wouldn't, he asked me for money they said "frick you" when I didn't give him any.
I learned a valuable lesson that day. I haven't picked up a single hitch hiker in the the following 30 years.

I like to pick up hitchhikers. When they get in the car I like to say, "So, how far did you think you were going anyway?", or "Put on your seat belt. I want to try something. I saw it once in a cartoon, but I think I can do it."
