Looking to get a better food plot mix and possibly blend one myself. Currently hunting pine timber company land in SW MS. Any particular blends/seeds that do better than others given the more acidic soil?

Also any advice on a Ag/Co-Op store that sells bulk where I could create my own blend?

I buy some wheat, oats, turnips and rape. Kind of mix it around in the hopper. Has worked for decades.

I like the buck busters mix, we use in where we hunt at in SW MS and it does good. The co-op in Kentwood, LA has it and they might be able to mix a special blend for you.

Great stuff. I can get it at my local feed and seed.

As much as I like to mix it myself for some self satisfaction, the buck busters mix is pretty solid.

Not sure where you are located, but Faith Seed Company in Thibodaux will make whatever blend you like. His price point is very reasonable.

Schexnayder's in Erwinville is where I go to get seed. It's cheaper than any store and they have all the seed types you could need. They have mixes, but I usually just mix my own.

I was pretty successful last year with planting

per acre
15 lbs Clover
50 lbs oats
1 lb Rape
5 lbs ladino

200 lbs 8-24-24 per acre

Co Op in Liberty can mix it for you and put in one of their spreaders.

Gatlin feed in Bogue Chitto just west of I-55. They have everything you need and super good to deal with. I live and hunt about 15 minutes north of Liberty.

Thank y’all for the responses.

Sounds like I’ll be planting one food plot with the buckbuster and another with a mix of my own. I’ll have a little competition between the two to see which comes up better and which one the deer like more

The Co-Op in liberty is very close to the lease so I will most likely go there.

One of the food plots will be a new food plot this year. Thinking about a mix heavy with Tillage Radish to help improve soil quality going forward and help get things ready for a spring food plot.

This plus Gamberi's in Natchez will do that for you as well. Wilkinson co-op always has pallets of seed mix incl buckbusters

I would go ahead and put out some lime. The radish is a good idea as well.

Don’t forget about winter peas. They will hit them as hard as cowpeas and are great at nitrogen fixation just like clover

Go to feed store

Buck/forage oats
Wheat
Winter peas
And your choice of turnips and clover

Mix your own.. have better food plots without all the extra rye grass
