It's time to change how our country fills the ranks of our military.

Since 1775, our nation has used a combination of volunteers and draftees to meet our national defense personnel needs, especially in times of crisis.

Today, the military needs only about 160,000 youth from an eligible population of 30 million to meet its recruitment needs. But after two decades of war -- both of which ended unsuccessfully -- and low unemployment, many experts believe the all-volunteer force has reached a breaking point. And American confidence in its military is at a low.

The fastest and most effective way to resolve this recruiting crisis is to change how we recruit.

Instead of an "either an all-volunteer force or a fully conscripted force" model, I propose a both-and solution.

We should have our military recruiters sign up new troops for 11 months out of the year, and then have the Selective Service draft the delta between the military's needs and the total number recruited.

This model would alleviate the incredible pressure on our recruiters, lower the cost of finding new troops, and significantly reduce the much decried civilian-military gap by subjecting all of America's youth -- rich and poor -- to the possibility of military service via the draft.

This increased public interest might also have the added effect of increasing public pressure to prevent open-ended wars led by unaccountable senior leaders like we experienced in our national debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan.

While the causes of our current recruiting crisis are many, the fastest and best solution lies within our already existing Selective Service System.

Sure. Make women eligible for the draft.

I also think we should not allow those not registered for the draft not eligible to vote

My son won’t be joining as long as our country is being held hostage by left-wing Commie authoritarians.

I spent 25 tears in the military and don't recommend my kids to join or your kids

Nah...not down with this. We need to go in the opposite direction.

Fix the military. Purge the woke. Train hard. Train with a purpose. Stop wasting the troops time with every random, synaptic misfire from flag officers and sergeants majors.

End the program for non-citizens to serve in order to expedite citizenship. Defend America with Americans. Sorry to those folks, but we have to up patriotism in this nation.

Recruit American citizens that care about this country. Make the military about service and national defense once again. If that means 99% of the military comes from the south and the midwest, so be it. If that means you offer immediate discharges to the woke crowd, so be it - I would sign off on that immediately.

Got a lot of fatties in the nation - if basic needs to be expanded, so be it. If there needs to be a prepatory phase prior to basic starting in earnest to get people lean and fit, so be it. If people want to serve, we ought to meet them in the middle and help them get fit and ready to serve. That will benefit our nation.

Give troops something to be proud of at the end of every duty day. Stop wasting so much time. And stop destroying recruiters - either plus up their ranks or stop pressuring them as the top of the chain makes their jobs impossible. Make the military a good product and it will recruit itself. Make it a pile of woke junk and no one will join or stay.

This is all very simple.

100% disagree. This is a horrible take. What more can an immigrant do to show loyalty to their new country than to put their lives on the line and take up arms against its enemies? Especially when the spoiled little brats of the native population aren't signing up, despite numerous significant long term benefits.

That is what was missed in 19th Amendment.

It should have said that women can vote and because of that are draftable.

If you want a seat at the decision table, that is the cost.

I doubt it would have passed.

They don't want a large strong military, they only say they do.

Every functional society has a warrior caste.

In our case it’s southern white men. Fighting is part of our culture, and that’s unique in the US. We’re largely it.

Absolutely.
If democrats support motor voter laws so vehemently, they should be thrilled to save "their democracy" via motor - selective service.

Also, anyone arrested in a riot, automatic enlistment. They are primed to fight.

Since illegals in IL can become police officers, have them 1st for the draft.

How many of that 30 million could pass the PT requirements?

on one level, I'm totally opposed to having another draft, having served through the bottoming out of the Army in 1971...that being said, a broader subset of America needs to be exposed to military service...

another thing I'd do is to have a military school for 17 year olds where they could finish high school (NOT A GED) and be trained up to standard where they could successfully complete basic training...this would take a year IMO...

then I'd change the appropriate portion of Title 10 US Code expanding the United States Militia to women...that's the first step in drafting them and I think it's time to do so....

Neither of these is why they are short.
