Mine is 30 years old and still holding up. Have used it almost daily. From book bag to carry on to gym bag to overnight bag.

I had an Ogio mastermind for years and it was nothing short of perfect. I wanted to buy another one and the quality just wasn’t there.
I’m extremely particular about my bag. I need a place for everything and I carry a lot of stuff. I shopped for 2 months for a bag because I didn’t want to “make do”. I was looking for quality and a good bag that matched the utility of the Ogio Mastermind.
After a ridiculously long search, I came across the Samsonite Sweetwater backpack. This thing is amazing and is the best pack I’ve ever owned.

OGIO and Swiss are good brands too
As she told me when I asked her about the Jansport backpacks we had been looking at- ‘Dad, the North Face is cute…and it’s in style’
So I don’t think there’s going to be any other backpacks this year.

had a Jansport in middle and high school and the zipper broke in college. I sent it in because they had a lifetime warranty and they sent me a new and better backpack. I still have it, 20 years later and it is in good shape.
Damn that’s a cool story, bro. My son used mine from high school/college ca. 2000, and the fabric ripped just beside the seam, which apparently falls under ‘wear and tear’, and not under warranty. I waited a few weeks before I finally threw it out. Now I wish I had sent it in, just to see if they would have replaced it.

Agreed
They’ve made a serious effort to recover from being a lifestyle brand, and going back to being a company that makes good gear.

is this gear youve actually used or just looked at online?
Trusted my life to.
My NF 8000 meter suit is 30 years old but I haven't been able to see a difference when I have looked at the ones in stores the only difference I see are the zipper pulls are different and the shell front zipper is offset coming to the face which is a good thing because the old ones were in the center and condensation from the O2 mask would freeze them solid if you didn't pay attention. Mine has seen many expeditions including Everest, other 8,000 meter peaks, and Denali. There are plenty of other good ones like Marmot, Mountane, Millet, Himali and Mountain Hardware but if I was buying another one tomorrow it would be a NF or Himali but different climbers have different preferences.
I have owned a number of NF packs but as I said I don't like their current lineup of technical packs because of their layout. The only one I have had fail was one I tossed off Sickle Ledge when rapping off El Cap because of snow, but you can blame a pack when it pops getting dropped 600 feet. By buddy's Black Diamond stayed intact but hard to infer anything from that.
There clothing has gotten cheaper and more fashion-forward over the last decade but all the technical gear and one of my favorites the base camp duffel still appear (in the flesh) to be built like they always have been.
I can't vouch for the bookbags they may be a completely different quality level.

They hold up, they just don’t hold shite. My daughter had one, wife sent it back and got her an LL Bean backpack.

I wondered if it would hold a binder- they look narrow, which makes sense in a mountain, but not so much in a classroom

I like Mountain Hardware and also Black Diamond.

My kids shoulder strap unraveled after about a year of use.
Patagonia Refugio’s seem to hold up well. They’ve used those through several years of school.
Agreed to get what they want, not so they can stand out, but so that they don’t stand out.

I have good news for you, having bought a bunch of backpacks to match the ones that other kids have. When they grow up, and decide to get into hiking/camping, and need a $400 backpack to hit the trails, they have jobs and buy their own.

Ive got one that ive had since my freshman year in college (05). Went through four years and was a travel backpack for several after I graduated. Holds some of my camera gear now and I shite you not, it looks exactly the same as the day I bought it.
So Ive gotten a solid 18 years out of mine and it easily has that much and more left in it.

If you're serious about school, you go with a Kifaru EMR in olive drab. Bullet proof and doubles as an emergency shelter for small children.

Bought my daughter one at Academy. Almost $100 but still cheaper than that Lululemon one from last year. It was closer to $130. The Lululemon one is not well made.
