Heading to Montana at the end of August to do some fishing. Staying about 30 minutes north of YNP and planning on fishing the park one of the days.

Anyone ever fished on the north side of the park and have any recommendations? Hoping to find a spot we can hike a mile or two into to get away from the heavily fished spots close to the road.

Thinking maybe soda butte creek or lamar river.

Not in the same areas listed but there is some of the best slack water dry fly fishing in August on the planet just slightly north of West Yellowstone. Hebgen Lake, particularly the part of the lake closest to West Yellowstone, is unbelievably good. The trout are BIG and numerous and they are incredible aggressive when they are on. The lake gets some pressure and a boat is almost required but there are some guides in the area. Booking one this late is probably a tough get but might be interesting. I have a buddy with a drift boat in Swan Valley Idaho and he and I have fished Hebgen several times and it has never disappointed. It isn't traditional western river flow fishing, it is a lake, but man the trout are big, numerous and aggressive...

Will have to look into that if not this year, then next since we go each year. We have guides booked for two days for float trips, haven't decided on where we will be going yet, we will be based out of Emigrant when we are there.

Bear killed a woman’s there yesterday , so stay safe. I’m headed there at the end of this week for 3-4 days, but no fishing, may be able to ask for a report from the locals, so might can give a report, next week..

Heard there are some great spots on Lamar but you got to do some hiking to get to them. Hike is far enough that crowds are non-existent.

Campsite 3L1 is 3 miles in from the road on the Lamar River. It is right at the confluence of Cache Creek it is a good spot.

Soda Butte and the Lamar are some of the most heavily fished waters in the park due to being on the road. You can see pretty much the entire river as you are driving in the valley. Most people are lazy, so walk further than them.

Soda Butte/Lamar confluence will be packed with people due to being the shortest walk (and great fishing).

Also from Tower Junction, take NE Entrance Rd (same to take you to Lamar Valley) about a quarter mile to the bridge over the Yellowstone River. There are pull offs and trails on both sides for a bit along the river.

I’ll have to look it up, but if you continue on the road to the Speciman Ridge Trail, you can park and hike about a mile (?), the trail turns, but if you continue straight you can bushwhack down a steep mountain to the Yellowstone. That side is hardly fished due to putting in effort.

Grebe Lake is a 4 mile one way hike where you can catch grayling relatively easily.

I can’t remember the length of hike, but I’ve caught some pigs at the Hellroaring Creek/Yellowstone confluence. I think there may be a fire in that area that just started.

My family went on a vacation in the park when I was a youngster. We booked a guide to take us out on Yellowstone Lake and I caught a beautiful keeper trout. The part of the story that might interest you was we ate dinner at the restaurant at the lodge and they prepared and served my fish to me.

I returned as an adult and spent most of the drive from Bozeman looking at the water and wishing I knew how to fly fish. Beautiful country.

How experienced are you? I’m assuming not very with that area because people say hike a mile or two but what you don’t realize is that a lot of that country is really hard to get away from people and the roads as the country is rough. Your idea is solid, but actually doing it while on vacation is not the easiest.

A lot of the guides only have permits or otherwise just fish small areas. They may tell you one area is best or whatever and that’s where they are going, but the truth is that’s all that one guide fishes. Not all of them, but many are. So be careful.

The fly shops are generally pretty good about helping you match the current hatch.

The nice thing about Yellowstone Park is a lot of the streams are a nice size. Not too small and not too big. You can catch fish everywhere though. But some of the best spots to fish are up into the National Forrest areas that will get you further away from the googans. But, not necessarily better fishing.

Definitely have bear spray

Yep fly fished the Gallatin on a float trip. It was fun even though I suck at it. Scenery was indeed breathtaking.

Bring your own equipment I went to buy some around west Yellowstone and all I could find was a super expensive shop in Idaho on the snake river.

If you are fly fishing throw something subsurface and orange. Either a large nymph with and orange bead head or even just an orange egg pattern. The fish in the West never see salmon eggs but the rainbows will eat the shite out of anything orange. Most guides will tell you dont do this, but I recommend trying it.

When my son worked up that way, they did great all over the Park. Some days hiked a ways in, others they didn’t.

If you want to do Hebgen I can put you in contact with my father. He retired on the peninsula jutting into the lake and has a boat. Always looking for people to fill the boat as well
