quote:Correct, they gave him more now(this coming season) and in return the total value of the deal is less than Herb likely would have gotten next offseason if he has a "normal" Herb type year.
Pels had a team option with Herb for this coming year at $1.8M. It's a business. You don't just "give away" a great option like that...for nothing
Pros/cons on both sides:
- Pels pay more now, likely less long term
- Herb gets guaranteed money 1 year early but risks the potential to have earned more if waiting 1 more year

2nd round picks and undrafted guys don't become RFA's when their rookie contract is up like 1st round picks. They become unrestricted free agents free to sign with anyone.
by declining his club option this year made him become a RFA so they could give him the new contract.
The same thing is going to happen to Jose next offseason assuming he continues his stellar play and warrants a new contract.

Didn’t realize that, really good point. Waiting til next offseason when Herb is an unrestricted free agent makes absolutely no sense. Good move by Griff.

Can you point me to a source? Because I don't think that this is quite right.
If I remember correctly, 1st-round picks are given fully-guaranteed contracts, but there's nothing that prevents a 2nd-round pick from getting one, and I think we gave Herb the same kind of contract that he'd have gotten if he were a 1st-round pick.
I'm pretty sure that Herb was going to be a RFA after next season, if we hadn't declined the option to sign him to a new deal.

It’s 100% not correct as a blanket statement. Austin Reaves was just a high profile restricted free agent after his 2 year contract with the Lakers. Even two-way players are often restricted free agents.
There’s language on the nba website about restricted free agency that I interpret to mean: any player whose contract expires after playing 3 or less seasons becomes a restricted free agent instead of an unrestricted free agent (pending qualifying offer when applicable)

Just a well-thought-out agreement (of course, it couldn't be worked out ahead of time...before the Pels decided to drop their "team option" on Herb...because well uhhh... that just wouldn't be "right"). Benefits for both sides...by turning down the "team option"...among them, Pels got to adjust "money per year" starting this year, which will be quite helpful in the future and Herb got his guaranteed bag of the additional $52M on top of his $1.8M...& he doesn't have to worry (as far as $$ is concerned, anyway) about blowing out a knee this year.
Solid & fair deal by both sides...imo. It's almost like the guys that put this deal together, do this kinda stuff for a livin'...or something.

So what you're trying to say is, Not on Herbert.
