Atlanta, GA is a sh!thole - 2 experiences driving through this weekend

We sent our son to a month long overnight camp in NC, live in Bham
Drove up to get him Thursday morning through Atlanta
We had real smooth sailing until we got on the ramp to the 75/85 connector from I 20
about halfway around the ramp, traffic stopped - no big surprise in Atlanta
What was surprising was the fact that at least a dozen homeless beggars were standing on the damned access ramp panhandling, a ramp on a federal interstate highway - we could also see their tents in the grass over the 2’ barriers that separate city streets and embankments from the ramp…
On the way home - just after we picked up the 75/85 connector from I 85 southbound; I saw a wrecked car on the Lindbergh Dr. HOV exit - the car was 1/3 on the shoulder and 2/3 on the road for the ramp - it looked like a car could maybe get around it, but it would be really tight
I called 911 to make a report (that situation could easily cause a bigger wreck/problem)
I was on hold with 911 for 7 minutes
So I hung up, knowing they would call me back
They called me back a few minutes later, just to put me back on hold…
I hung up again, and pressed “3” for “I don’t have a problem anymore” when they called back the 3rd time
For those that aren’t familiar with Atlanta, the Lindbergh Dr. exit is in Buckhead, Atlanta’s most affluent area by far; so the cell tower I was on should have directed me to a police station serving a fairly wealthy area
and I couldn’t get through to 911
Many in Buckhead want their own city (they have a zero percent chance of getting it) - I feel bad for them
Atlanta is really close to being the next L.A. or Seattle

Things get more third worldish by the day.

someone living in birmingham started a thread about how shitty atlanta is after just driving through it... interesting

You just realizing Atl is a dump? Jokes on you......

You would have been better off taking I-285 and not venturing inside the perimeter but yes there are tent cities rivaling LA and San Francisco through out downtown Atlanta which is really sad.

This board needs to realize that most American cities are in a weird spot right now. I travel a good bit and everywhere looks worse. New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Houston, Austin, Dallas, Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, LA etc. all in worse shape now than pre COVID.
It may turn around one day, but we don’t need a thread everytime someone drives into a different city and sees trash on the ground.

Gee… I wonder what the common denominators are putting most American cities in a “weird spot.”

This, right here. Downtown ATL is no different than every other city it’s size.
Birmingham, because it is several orders of magnitude smaller than ATL, doesn’t have the same set of issues going on right now.

I’m from Atlanta, moved here in 2003
Still have lots of friends and relatives there, my brother lives in Buckhead
Bham has problems, but not anything near what Atlanta has - city leader here are far better than what Atlanta has

I bet you and many of the repliers consider themselves “Christians”, but Jesus would find your thoughts a fruitful example for sermons.

Maybe, but we were able to capture a goat running wild through Mountain Brook this past week. Don't mess with our GOATs
