Is Magnolia, Arkansas about to become the hub for 15% of the world's lithium production?
"Exxon Mobil is planning to build one of the world’s largest lithium processing facilities near the town, with a capacity to produce 75,000 to 100,000 metric tons of lithium a year, sources say, which would be 15 percent of the world's lithium production."

That will be a giant eyesore, but it's used for electric so the nature lovers probably won't complain like they do about a pipeline carrying evil oil.

Future environmental disaster.

Until they see how lithium mining is done then it will be back to rainbow and unicorn farts to power your EV

Wife’s family is from Springhill right by Magnolia and own chunks of property on both sides of the state line.
Sorry baws, but it looks like I’m about to pull a JV John Kerry on y’all’s arse.

For how many years? How big is the hole in the earth gonna be? For comparison,
quote:
Over a year, producing 60,000 tons of lithium at Thacker Pass in Nevada could devastate the surrounding environment -up to 30 million tons of earth needs to be dug. This is more than the annual amount of dirt dug up to produce all coal output of all but seven or eight US states

quote:
But the irony is that the US's move from fossil fuels to lithium-powered electric batteries is not entirely environmentally friendly. To extract one ton of lithium requires about 500,000 liters of water, and can result in the poisoning of reservoirs and related health problems.
Sounds great.

They have discovered a way to get Lithium from the Bromine they are putting back in the earth. 2 companies are involved it that area

Yeah, they're drilling for this. Not strip mining.

I don't understand the process of lithium extraction at this location but the article said they are extracting the lithium from lithium brine.

Explain why this is a problem? It would be chemically analogous to striping sodium from chlorine.

It's sound like there are lithium salt deposits and Exxon plans to mine the lithium by dissolving it in water and bringing it to the surface, extract the lithium then replace the void with water and the other salts left over.
Exxon is familiar with the mining process because they create salt domes through the same process in south Louisiana to store O&G. They sell the brine to chemical companies to make chlorine and bleach.

That ground water refuse will help the Louisiana fracking industry from being targeted hopefully
