Prices I've been charged in Lafayette this year.

-$350 to have a condenser motor replaced.

-$125 for capacitor replacement (on Sunday)

Those are fairly decent prices. You came away like a bandit.

Dealers set their own price per hour on the labor not including trip charge and Freon replacement if needed. It could run anywhere b/w $50 & $95 per hr.

It's the labor that will eat at you. Parts are normally not very high.

In fact, you could have purchased and replaced the capacitor on your own although highly not encouraged. Part is between $9 and $25. Dealer will charge around $170 - $200 to install it.

If you have the standard warranty on your unit(s), you were likely only charged for the labor.

$10k is a bit on the high side if you are simply replacing a unit (box outside the home). If they have to change out the furnace to match your unit then yes, good price.

Note that the standards on Freon is changing in 2025.
Things have gone from R22 to 410A and now going to R35.
Naturally if a unit has to be replaced it will also require replacing what's in the attic to match apples to apples.

Most are holding onto the 410A as long as they can. Freon availability won't go out anytime soon despite the change; however, if one is looking to sell their home within the next 5 years and have to replace a unit now, stick with the Freon version you currently have to avoid having to change the entire A/C & Furnace out.

Be sure to register that unit the moment it's installed.
Non-registration will get you 5 years parts (no labor).
Registering it will get you 10 years parts (no labor).

Ofcourse you can always purchase an extended warranty parts and labor; however, I would only recommend that if you are hard on your unit.

Best of Luck...

Seems like just yesterday they converted to the 410A coolant. Maybe just 2 more years and they'll have a new R69 coolant and R35 will be obsolete.

It’s crazy the discrepancies between quotes of one company and the next. But most people I find are getting ripped off. Just check these prices from HVAC direct to get an idea of what these units cost, and they are probably getting them cheaper than that. You can get a 4 ton Goodman condenser, coil, and furnace for under $3500, that’s basically everything except the duct work, and what’s the labor going to cost for one day to install those at $50 or even $100 an hour? 4 ton, 15 seer condenser is under 2K, and heat pumps under 3K HVAC direct

Fair take. There is a slim margin from manufacturer to dealer for the unit(s). Dealer can price the asset at whatever they feel keeps their doors open and ofcourse demand.

Labor is the largest expense on anything the dealer is performing for the homeowner.

Manufacturer margins are slim, but they sell so many units they can cover their cost and still clear handsome profits.

Sitting in a non air conditioned house in July for a few days makes large repair bill numbers seem cheap. I just replaced both the inside and outside units in a section of my house. We replaced a 5 ton, 14 seer Trane with the same size Rheem for $9900. The Trane folks all wanted $15K. I will be moving away from Trane for sure.

we have a local Trane store that will sell to individuals. A few yrs ago the condenser fan on our bedrooms unit went out. (the big fan on the outside portion). got a quote of $800 plus labor from a service. Went to the Trane store and the counter guy says yeah, they just double what it costs and charge you that. I bought it for $400 and installed it myself. It was just a plug and play item but it was expensive nevertheless.

Quote variances are pretty astounding to me. Here is what I have seen (in Chattanooga) all for a 4 ton heatpump replacement
- Tempstar - $8,161
- Maytag - $8,546
- Trane - $11,457
- Goodman (company 1) - $8,880
- Goodman (company 2) - $6,400
