It’s a good place as the evolution of the term has placed it in political discourse
As others have noted, the origin goes back to a 1938 play “Gas Light” ( and American movie of the same “”Gaslight”). It’s evolved considerable since then. The extreme use of trying to seek commitment has eroded LINK
Even the colloquial use defined by psychologists above has evolved. It became a popular term for psychological manipulation in couple relationship in the 2000s to where there was an identification with f five different types. See, eg LINK
In modern times, it tends to refer to most types of psychological manipulation. You will see heavy use of the term in political discourse and in media criticism. You will see it used a lot on discussion boards. For instance, I’m sure it would not be hard to identify a couple of posters active right now, who every time they get caught being wrong, they will claim “that’s what I always said” or “I posted that years ago”

My 16 year old son nailed how the term gaslighting is used today by saying “People use the term gaslighting to mean they disagree with what you are saying.”
Nah, he misses the nuance, and apparently you do too.

I largely agree. Particularly about the evolution of the term. There isn’t anyone qualified to tell you which language and symbols are suppose to be used unless you are agreeing on specific conventions for use
Language evolves and it’s evolution enhances communication. It allows people that want to join conversations to express themselves without having to wade through lots of potentially boring or non related texts. Sometimes words and phrases lose power with overuse (eg “rent free”), and sometimes people will use newer words to exclude from the conversation. Indeed, there is one poster who just makes up his own abbreviations
Obviously some conversations require more precision. A psychologist probably couldn’t meaningfully use a diagnosis of “gaslit” to help advance treatment. Nevertheless, it works fine here
As for differences today, I do think Bill Clinton and his political progency were users of these tactics at the same degree as today. We just didn’t have a term for it then. We had to settle for “Slick Willy”. If we had the modern “gaslighting” in our Mr vocabulary, we could have discussed it better

It has simply been misused so much, by so many people, that its meaning has become obscured.

the issue is that colloquial language is typically used on message boards and anal retentive types get all bent out of shape because they dont like their side being called gaslighters.

No, this new type of political/cultural lying is different. At least with the old lying there was a backstop of reality that the majority understood and relied upon. The standards of “common sense” and “reasonable person” have been intentionally corrupted and nullified by the “queering” or “anti-normativity” of the wokists.
This is the death of the monoculture not gaslighting. When Walter Cronkite gave the days news in 30 minutes, people could bar their disagreements off a shared set of “facts” even if those facts were often lies or at least misleading. The internet broke that. We’re all in our own bubbles and when we speak to someone outside our bubbles they sound insane, and we sound insane to them, because no one is talking about the same set of facts. It’s made filling the public with lord and misinformation easier than ever, but it’s still not gaslighting. Most of us spend all day online reading and talking to people who mostly agree with us. We aren’t in danger of doubting our own sanity. If anything we are more likely to believe that everyone else is insane

Again, are gaslighting tactics being used today? It's ironic you say everyone around agrees with someone the government is lying, when it's clear in this thread alone, that is not true.
Everyone agrees that they are lying. They just disagree with each other about what the lies are. Sometimes it’s not even that extreme. If you talk to a lefty, a nationalist, and a libertarian (really most people who aren’t mainstream Democrats or Republicans); many of their criticisms of the government will be exactly the same. Their solutions are wildly different and the cultures that want to live in are incompatible so they will never work with each other

a catchy phrase millenial women love to use when a guy isn't treating them like the yass queen they think they are

, but it’s still not gaslighting.
If youre purposely lying, and making the other "side" feel like theyre the crazy ones, thats gaslighting.
The perfect example is the Fairy Religion.

gaslighting

the practice of psychologically manipulating someone into questioning their own sanity, memory, or powers of reasoning:
"he said he was the victim of gaslighting" · "gaslighting is an insidious technique of deception and psychological manipulation"
