Maybe this is for the OT, maybe not.... I still don't have confidence that I really know what this term actually means.

Here's my stab...
Gaslighting - Artificially inflating the importance of an issue

Just normal average folks using a word to sound semi intelligent for a couple of months.

That certainly could include targets thinking they might be crazy. Glenn Youngkin followers without a racist bone in their body seeing a group of Tiki Torch "racists" claim to be part of the Youngkin election effort, might suddenly think they'd been insane for supporting Youngkin in the first place.

In reality the TikiTorch brigade were neither racists, nor Younkin supporters. They were Democrat actors. The TikiTorch BS was a failed gaslight.

You're misunderstanding gaslighting. The express intent needs to be for someone to doubt reality as a whole.

Someone thinking their racist because they support people that other people call racist is not an example of being gaslit.

Even if all of these things were lies perpetuated by the government or the left, or whatever else you may think. That's still not an example of gaslighting.

There's many correct explanations of gaslighting in this thread.

AggieHank... doing it right now, and often for years.

Every time you've downplayed some issue, called it overstated', 'out of context' or 'misunderstood' -- you've been a willing agent.

If they person questions their memory or sanity later, you've done your job.

I got you, I'll give you one that's an example and maybe you can see the difference.

If you really believe that my previous post was gaslighting, you're insane.

See? I hope we learned something today.
