Yes, but the concept has naturally expanded. The assumption underlying gaslighting is that objective truth exists and that everyone normally operates on the premise that communication between parties is designed to seek truth. It relies on trust.

It’s not supposed to be a political term. It’s historically been reserved for like family members and partners doing something awful and then telling you it never happened, forcing you to mistrust your own sanity. When politicians and media figures lie, they are just lying and trying to mislead you. It’s embarrassing that everyone is running around saying they’ve been “gaslit” when everyone else around them pretty much agrees that the government is lying

No one said the vaccine was 100% effective is a gaslight campaign that you see actually worked.

Roger, in this thread everyone but you is engaged in an amicable discussion regarding the meaning and proper usage of a phrase in jargon.

Again, are gaslighting tactics being used today? It's ironic you say everyone around agrees with someone the government is lying, when it's clear in this thread alone, that is not true.

To get someone to go insane, doesn't there need to be psychological manipulation involved. Just because they are not successful in making Americans insane, does not mean they are not using the tactics of gaslighting sir.
obviously, there is no Holy Writ anywhere, defining the cultural use of the term “gaslighting.“ Different people will interpret it different ways.

To me, the key element for something to constitute “gaslighting“ is the affirmative desire to produce insanity or to cause another to QUESTION her sanity.

Using the same tactics, with a different goal (for instance, political manipulation) is certainly “disinformation.“ I personally do not see it as “gaslighting.

I suppose that I just like the film enough to make me a purist on this point.

Maybe not to produce insanity, but maybe to get one to doubt their sanity.

It's basically people trying to manipulate others for their own gain. Nothing new. Everyone's been doing since the dawn of time. Is it worse now? No. Is it an overused term? Hell yeah it is.

absolutely correct. Of course, that is what I said in my first post. I got lazy and started using shorthand. Thanks for reminding me.

Yes. But now it has an expanded definition.

No, this new type of political/cultural lying is different. At least with the old lying there was a backstop of reality that the majority understood and relied upon. The standards of “common sense” and “reasonable person” have been intentionally corrupted and nullified by the “queering” or “anti-normativity” of the wokists.

Go read 1984 again. It’s one thing to lie, it’s another thing to make you believe that war is peace, weakness is strength, men can be women, 2+2 can equal 5, etcetera.

Your lost.

The term is being applied appropriately to the social situation in this nation.

Good example, but bad explanation.

Calling the vaccines safe and effective was the lie.

Calling you a far right extremist or a terrorist for you doubting the veracity of the claim is the gaslighting part.

Gaslighting narrative: All white people are racist and oppress black people.

Result: Many white people who were never racist start questioning themselves. Soon they are apologizing, some require their employees to take diversity classes at work so they are not too white in the work place.

And even worse if you refuse to date them because they are a transwoman

That too would be consistent with the film.

Good clarification. If you doubt the safety and efficacy of the vaccines, you are a conspiracy theorist. It's completely normal for athletes in their youth to die of heart attacks.
