Know Any Embezzlement Victims?

Embezzlement can be tough for businesses to prevent and detect.
One business owner pal has been burnt twice in 15 years by embezzling employees.
The first time, the gal who kept the books got romantically involved with a scumbag manager who convinced her to drain the company's accounts, flee their families and start over.
The second time was a young criminal who evaded background checks and got hired in accounting. She managed to siphon off tens of thousands of dollars before getting caught.
Got any horror stories?

My uncle's company in Lafayette. Their long time, reliable book keeper decided to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from them.

I know both parties involved in an embezzlement case. The "criminal" went on vacation and slept with a lady of the night who then blackmailed him saying she'd tell his wife and she had proof. So he stole the money from the store that he managed.
Really messy situation. The wife obviously found out about it all and left him. He's a decent guy that made one bad decision and followed it with several more bad decisions.

Yep. Have seen this with several clients. Employee has access to funds - whether it be access to bank accounts, checks, company cards, etc. Each time, when it was finally discovered and all tallied up, the company was robbed hundreds of thousands.

My brother's wife stole about 60K from our family business. Messy situation.

I noticed you didn't say ex wife. I guess good for your brother trying to work it out but I think I would feel betrayed to a point beyond fixing it.

HOA manager of the townhouses we lived in was caught doing it

I know of a woman who scammed a diocese out of quite a bit of money by buying gift cards on the diocese card (as gifts, prizes, etc) and then would just exchange them herself. I can't remember the amount but it was significant (she was caught though).

I'm suspicious of anyone who volunteers for a position of power like that. Even if its not stealing money, I feel like those type of people just want to be able to frick people over.

Usually if it’s a woman who is embezzling from her employer, it’s a gambling problem.
If it’s a guy…it’s a drug problem.

I've never met a woman who bets on sports...

Sports gambling isn't the only type of gambling. When video poker was legal in Ouachita Parish, Johnny's Pizza had three machines per location. He said it was the perfect cover for middle aged women to gamble while the husbands were at work. He said he didn't care if he ever sold another pizza.

Accountant count in our neighbor was stealing money from youth baseball league.
She’d still come out to her kids soccer games while out on bond wearing skimpy shorts. I forgave her.

I have a buddy that embezzled a little over 180K from a regional parts house. He would find something not in stock, return it to the store so it was in inventory but the money the store was returning he would slide his personal card so the money would come back to him.
More than likely, fueling a gambling problem. Still to this day, hasn’t paid back friends he borrowed money from after he had gambled his whole check away.

One of my IT clients hired a new bookkeeper, something about her set off my alarms bells. The first thing I noticed was that my invoice, which had always been paid within 30 days, was now taking 60 days, this a huge red flag. By pushing the payables back she created a gap, in that gap were funds that would not be missed.
I went to the business owner and explained how this worked and how vulnerable he was, but he was convinced that she was a member of his church and he was sure of her character. Another month or 2 went by and the payables were backed up to 90 days, she was smart enough to make sure the suppliers were paid, but not ancillary services.
I had set up his Quickbooks and trained him how to use it, so I had access to all of his accounting data. I went through and found that there were vendors with no transactions prior to her hiring. I went to the owner and showed him where the funds were being diverted to the new vendors.
He asked her to explain the cash flow issue he was now having, she quit in a huff, saying if he didn't trust her she couldn't work there. Fortunately the damage was minimal and unfortunately he didn't want to turn her over to police.
I don't understand how a company can have a sizable amount of money disappear and not be aware of it. This woman was an amateur and easy to catch, most are a lot smarter, but still, how does a business let cash flow get out of whack and not realize it.

My wife's best friend (of 40 years) family owns a custom woodwork company in Connecticut. The accountant/bookkeeper stole 350k over the course of 9 years. The kicker, she was married to the owners son. My wife's BFF sister in law. They figured it out after the 2 had divorced and she was still working for them. She was double and triple paying her husband and self for years.
5 years later, to my knowledge she still works for them and the ex's still live together with a daughter and each have significant others with at least one in the same house. The parents, the owners, have tried to sell the business and move to Myrtle Beach where they gave a summer home, but have yet to find a buyer.
The kicker is she was using the money to pay for their swingers lifestyle and he had no knowledge of the theft, he is pretty slow in my limited experience and didn't even look at the finances. Recently my wife found out her BFF was part of the same swingers group, it was apparently about 15 to 20 couples and many of them were somehow related. My wife no longer talks to her friend anymore.

I know there was two employees that embezzled from Franco’s athletic club in Mandeville. There was also an executive of Perlis that took nearly 3 million (over like 17 years) which is wild.

Youth baseball league when I was on the board voted on a couple to run the concession stand. I argued against it since they had a couple of failed businesses. Well, one board member and the President pushed for them so the majority voted for the couple.
Well, snatched $13K, claimed receipts, etc., were burned in a kitchen fire at her place.
Police got involved and nuttin.
I still think about how that came about 28 years ago.
