What is it about our modern lifestyle that is causing the rates of autism to increase so rapidly?

So Im not sure what the diagnostic criteria is for it in 2023
I hear this a lot. My son is autistic, non verbal and was diagnosed around two years old. It’s pretty well defined sequence of testing, diagnosing, reports, and signatures to get an official diagnosis and to get insurance to pay for therapy.
A lot of folks I meet tell me their kid is autistic because a professional said they may be on the spectrum. They may be, but I think you’d be hard pressed to find a child who has been diagnosed based on their ADOS score that doesn’t have very apparent social deficiencies amongst probably some other issues.

it’s the definition that’s changing. You see the same thing for dyslexia, depression, anxiety, adhd, etc. More awareness sometimes equals more diagnoses.
This. Nowadays, damn near everyone on Reddit claims to be "autistic" ("high-functioning Aspergers", of course).

1:271 for Amish is probably the more accurate rate in the general population as well.
Were the non-Amish kids screened with the same criteria? The grouping of functional Asperger’s kids as ASD along with the nonverbal kid who “stims” constantly (shakes arms/hands) is essentially the equivalent of a 60 year old diabetic with a hgb a1c of 7.5 being grouped with a type 1 diabetic 8 year old who needs insulin injections to survive.
I’m guessing the Amish ignore the socially awkward engineer types in regards to this diagnosis, while the baseline data includes them as ASD.

Vaccines could play a role... especially the accelerated schedule in which we give vaccines to kids.

It is the trendy thing for moms to do these days. Make posts on social media about how their child is “on the spectrum”

Is the secondary gain here more money in food stamps, disability checks, et al? Free babysitting (ABA therapy)?

VACCINES are a YUGE reason for increase in autism. There are statistics that show the rapid increase of vaccinations boom back In 70-80’s to the boom in autism growth.
I taught autism when I coached ball as well, a very horrible situation for parents, my heart goes out to them

When comparing different groups using the SAME measures at the SAME time the Amish were 3 times less likely and Alaskans were 2.5 times less likely to have autism.
Additionally, we've gotten better at detecting autism in girls.

This thread made me think of Mose Schrute.

I think I may have cracked the code, if y'all would quit teaching it fewer kids would learn it. Problem solved.

While it can be difficult, it’s far from horrible. They don’t need your heart bud.

Jesus Christ… This site depresses the shite out of me sometimes by reminding me how unbelievably unaware some people are about their lack of knowledge. What’s worse is they think they’re experts in the subject matter due to clickbait articles they likely only read the titles of.

I guess you’re only into responding to what you perceive as “drive by comments”, but choose to ignore when the information that you asked for is presented to you?
Can’t say I’m surprised, it’s typical

Man, do people actually feel this way? ABA therapy is free babysitting? Food stamps for autism? You guys should go spend some time at the emerge center and identify the children whose parents are frauds. That’ll show em.

Seems like diagnosing is the problem. Any introvert can claim autism now.

Um......nope.
And yes, I graduated from an actual med school

Don’t have it.
How’s your sobriety? Not holding up, judging from the fact that you’ve already forgotten how to use the quote function this early in the morning

One of my employees dead beat ex husband collects disability for his 9 year old autistic son. The son doesn’t see a penny of that money. You tell me.
