Parents under 35, do you spank your children?

If so, under what circumstances?

If not, what is your reasoning?

It seems that spanking kids has almost completely disappeared from our society. I’m in no way advocating for a “beating.” As a matter of fact, I have two grown children, and I spanked each of them only a handful of times in their lives. I have three grandchildren now, and I’m not aware of them ever being spanked. To be perfectly honest, I can see and understand both sides.

no it hasn't unfortunately

If you feel you are needing to spank your kid, 9 out of 10 times its your issue not the kids

I don't have kids but I would spank them once to instill the fear, and then just threaten it whenever they are bad. That's what my dad did to me and it seemed to work because I would shape up quick whenever he cracked that belt

More importantly, do you spank your children 35 and over.

I don’t belong in here as I’m 48 but I have 3 kids. Never spanked my oldest daughter. I spanked the shite out of my oldest son, now 19. Only “lightly” spanked my youngest who is 10. My younger brother who is 36 spanks his boys but not his girls, sister n law spanks them though but all their kids are also good at this point. They are all in the 5-10 y/o range

Fwiw, I haven’t spanked my 19 y/o since he was 6 or 7 but it was a whooping not a spanking. I haven’t spanked him consistently since around 4 or 5.

There you go, the modern viewpoint in a nutshell.

These are always great threads. You'll have lots of people with no kids telling you how to raise yours. There is no blanket answer. Sometimes spanking in necessary, if nothing else is working.

I am 35. I’ve spanked my now 3.5 year old a few times. Mostly when he was around 2. Haven’t had to in a long time, since the threat is now there.

We give him plenty of chances to avoid it (I sure don’t want to do it), and most of the time he cooperates before it comes down to spanking.

I am 41 so I am too old for this but I do have 3 kids. The first one I didn't really have to spank. She was a kid that listened and i would just have to give her the look and she shaped up. The second one got her butt spanked allllllll the time and it didn't work. She is just as strong willed at 16 as she was at 3. The baby who is 3 now, well I don't spank him. He's the baby boy, it hurts my heart to even fuss at him. But daddy will pop his butt if he needs it. but he is a pretty good kid too. If I had the middle child first I would never have had another kid.

fricking right we did. My daughter has a child that's 1.5 years old. She is already sternly correcting him and will spank if needed when he's older.

It was tough coming up with an age that wasn’t completely arbitrary. I used that number because it limits things approximately to millennial parents.

I've only done it once with our toddler, she bit me and got a spank on the leg for it as an instant reaction, I felt like a total a-hole but noticed that afterwards she never again tried to bite so I convinced myself it was worth it. She's relatively well behaved and follows instructions with time out, or even the threat of time out.

I'm not against spankings but will go out of my way to use it as a last ditch effort.

I did when they were very young, but as they grew older the shame of disappointing me is more painful and lasting than any physical punishment.

Not to spanking age yet, but I have no aversion to a pop on the arse if necessary in the moment to send a message that whatever behavior is totally unacceptable/needs to stop. Biting, etc. as others have mentioned. Verbal warnings would come first of course.

Don't see myself ever delivering a true "spanking" as in hitting multiple times or using a belt, etc.

In my mind, its more of an attention-getting device than a punishment.

Everyday my kids know that they got 10 smacks coming automatically. Its up to them to work that number down by the end of the day through chores and good deeds.
