Ideas for Washington DC trip

Wanted to visit the nation’s capital at some point in July since the BTR>DC direct flights went back on sale. I haven’t been in 20+ years, and wanted to get plenty of sightseeing and great food/drinks. Just looking for a few recommendations on where to stay for most efficiency. Any insight on the more densely populated restaurant areas? Sightseeing wise, I wanted to see the Smithsonian and monuments. Any other things I may not be thinking of that are absolute must-do’s are greatly appreciated as well. TIA!

One thing you can do is have your congressman arrange for you to have a tour of the Capitol and White House, but if you are going in a few weeks it may be too late for that. You have to get a security clearance.
We like to stay at the Willard near the White House. There are many good restaurants within walking distance.

While there, watched as one of my state's Senators discussed immigration with many out of country visitors in the balcony. It was interesting to hear and watch and recommend doing this to anybody visiting DC.

I see you've been before ... these would be the top of my list if you missed them before...
the White House ... the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial nearby
Arlington Cemetery .. check for time of changing of the guard, Kennedy sites, "Lee" house and "museum".
Ford's Theatre
National Archives Museum to see the Founding Documents
A visit to Congress
... (re)learn how the "subway" works in advance and the current options for using it multiple times.
It has been a few years ... there is a Hilton a short distance from White House ... it was just ok.
There is a popular restaurant / bar very near the White House that others will probably rem the name.

Went back in the fall of ‘21 & they still had stupid Covid rules in place. Wherever you go, check that they don’t require time reservations & vax requirements. A lot of the cool places like the federal reserve, USSC & Capitol were still closed to the public during this time despite being almost 2 years into Covid.

This is a great start, thank you guys. If anyone else has other ideas regarding specific restaurants, cocktail bars and hotel suggestions, I'm all ears.

Just sent two congressmen requests for tours. Would love to walk inside the Capital, White House or National Archives.

If you haven't been before, the Holocaust Museum, while a very somber experience, is worth a visit. The spy museum was pretty cool too (especially if you have kids).
I was just up there last month and we did a day trip to Annapolis and toured the Navy Academy. That was a very cool tour.

Went a few years ago with the fam. Stayed outside the loop and rode the train in.
I see you already wrote your rep to get the Capitol tour. That is worth it. Smithsonian is cool. Do more than just the air and space museum. Lots of other cool stuff in the others.
Go see the Declaration of Independence, for me it was a little moving. There is an airplane museum out at Dulles that is awesome. And keep water on you, it is freaking hot in July there.

Two of my favorite places in DC to visit are the Library of Congress (take the guided tour) and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (check to see what’s playing during your visit). If you’re Catholic, you might want to go to the Basilica (they do free one hour guided tours that are well worth your time) and there’s a new museum abt JPII across the street. For the monuments, I enjoy the night time tours when they’re all lit up.

Most popular bar/restaurant near White House is Old Ebbits Grill...a tradition. Smithsonian isn't a place; it's several museums on the Mall. Research online and pick 2 or 3. Natl Archive is open to tourists. Two less known art museums are The Phillips and Dumbarton Oaks. Both were private estates. They have an entrance fee. Take water taxi from Kennedy Center to Old Town Alexandria or just stay in Old Town. Hotel Indigo there is nice. Check for free outdoor evening concerts usually military bands. Visit Tomb of the Unknows.

I would strongly consider not going in July personally, DC is fantastic to walk around outside and its going to be horribly hot most likely in July. I know we are in the south and "used to it" but that doesn't mean anyone wants to walk around outside in the middle of the day and stand in lines.
Its certainly doable and obviously the museums and what not are inside, but just a suggestion to keep in mind. It will also be super busy most likely.

Good recommendations by all. Metro is on time, clean, and easy to use. Lots of good restaurants in Alexandria on King Street.

DC in July. your first must do is not die of a heat stroke. Seriously the weather in DC in the summer can be terrible. Hot and humid.

Highly recommend walking the mall/monuments at night, far less crowded and hot. The monuments look amazing all lit up.
