Wife and I just booked a flight to Destin for a long weekend this October, first time there for both of us. Just looking for ideas of where (not which hotel specifically) we should be looking for lodging. We mostly prefer beach (ocean side) near places that have good breakfast/brunch options. Not afraid to walk a bit for decent food, mostly want really good beach as close as possible.

San Destin Hilton.

Walk south

Upscale choice a little south of Destin would be the Pearl.
Near Destin look at Henderson Park Inn.
San Destin Hilton is good, especially since it won’t be as crowded that time of the year.

The Eastern side of Destin, the hotels are across the street from the beach. The street runs between the beach and the hotels. Try to avoid that if you want to be on the beach. Basically, look for The Back Porch on maps. EAST of that is the road separating the beach. WEST of that, you’re good. Sorry, I said it wrong. Edited to fix.
Make sure your condo has a washer and dryer. Not sure which ones do, if any, but maybe look for an indoor pool for October.
SanDestin is great if that’s what you’re looking for. A bunch of hotels and townhouses in their own little development along with golf courses. Nicer and more upscale area than Destin proper. I do not enjoy it in the summer as the beach is way too crowded, but October may be perfect. You can even rent a townhouse there. Some come with golf carts and you can use the cart for the beach and the surrounding hotels, restaurants, shops. If I was staying a week or two, I would love that, but for a weekend, I’d want to be on the beach.

Henderson Park Inn or Henderson Beach Resort.

You absolutely do not need an indoor pool in October.
October is the best month. The water temperature is usually warmer than the air and it’s the clearest of all the months.

It’s the Gulf, not the ocean.

The Pearl or Henderson is what you’re looking for. The Pearl area will be a bit more walkable than the Henderson as there are more bars and restaurants closer. In October you won’t have to worry about the crowds/traffic.
The Pearl, while considered beach front, is not technically on the beach as there is a great lawn between the beach and the hotel.
The Henderson has beach front rooms across the street from the main part of the resort.
Rent a car. Uber is not very reliable here. There are a few restaurants that you will want to visit that won’t be walkable from either hotel.

Huh? West from the back porch is Destin Gulfgate, Grand Mariner, Sterling Sands, Silver Beach, Sundestin Beach Breakers etc.... all of which are on the beach.
Ofcourse I am bias as I own in Destin Gulfgate, but we are as on the beach as you can get and West of Back Porch.

If you want close to beach and walkable, you might want to try Grayton Beach. You'll have to rent an AirBnB, but away from the traffic. The beaches are easy to get to - you don't have to cross 30A or haul your cooler up and over the dunes. You can rent a place on the beach, or a block or two away. On the beach has the views, but a block or two away will usually have homes with shade trees, hammocks, and peace and serinity.
There are a handful of restaurants from casual to very nice in town. The Red Bar is probably a must. From there, you can drive into Seaside (or walk on the beach) for all the events, restaurants, and live music going on there.

You can do better. Just stayed the week there. Destin itself is overpriced, and the Hilton is even overpriced for Destin.
Look for an airbnb.

I find much cheaper condos in Destin than I do in OBA.
