These pitch count police are always so strange. So what would've been a good number in their mind? 100? 110? So throwing an extra 20 or so pitches is just criminal and Skenes will clearly be ruined because of it
Show me some data that shows what an optimum pitch count is for a starting pitcher and what the fallout is for throwing 20 more than that. And I say starter because they are conditioned to throw a 100+ pitches each outing.

The article was written because the Nationals are likely to draft Skenes at #2.
The article simply comes from a place of Washington D.C. self interest.

Screw all these Johnny-come-lately writers and prognosticators.
It is what is was, it's history. No one could predict what we were looking at, forward to, or in reverse.
As is, it worked out fine. We won game one behind Skenes, and did not have to worry about HAVING to win two on Sunday.

My favorite part is the assertion JJ did it for short term financial greed

Probably praised black pitcher for his toughness, competitiveness and stamina. Praised as a hero.

A college ace threw 124 pitches — and MLB teams grimaced
Since he was only 4 pitches over the MLB Pitch Smart Guidelines for a 19-22 year old they probably didn’t care. When they noticed that the 124th pitch was 100 mph that grimaced face turned into a giant smile for the Pirates’s GM.

Well I tried to read, but it wanted my email, so I gave them one: frickyou@frickyou.com

Nolan Ryan threw 235 pitches in one game.
And on 3 days rest pitched 6 scoreless innings against the Yankees…

This was before pitchers tried to maximize their spin rate. greater risk for injuries nowadays

235 and then 3 days rest tossing 6 scoreless vs the Yankees. Spin rate my arse when it is popping out at 102+ on his FB then... if you want him to be someone, be like the 35 y/o Ryan. At 46 when he really really commanded his pitches he threw his last one at 98.

They know his last pitch was still pumping 100 mph? Dudes a MACHINE.

They need to STFU! The bullpen is thin AF, and you have a possible 4 game Regional. Jay Johnson rightfully rode his horse that is MLB ready. I hated the Skenes start in game 1, but Jay Johnson proved he knows his team and players way better than I do! He and his coaching staff coached their asses off last weekend.

Lol, no they weren't. They were likely licking their chops seeing how he can throw 120+ without a drop-off. It would be a bigger risk drafting a guy that doesn't usually go past 80 pitches and hoping he can throw more if needed.

Not even his worse over1use of the year.
That would be pitching Garrett Edwards in both games of a double header, running his pitch count up to 70 in GM2 with a 10R lead

Guy makes $1.2mm. The insinuation that he would jeopardizes a kid’s health/career for an extra $50-$100k is laughable, but not surprising coming from that rag.

Not at all surprised that you would stand behind the Washington post's stance.
