Parents of the OT: How do you deal with child going to grandparents for the summer?

TL;DR. My 8 year old just left to go spend the summer with her grandparents. This is the longest I’ve been without her since her mom and I fought in a nasty custody battle. How do you handle the emotions of it all? Do you welcome the break from parenting? She does have an iPhone so we will FaceTime daily, but that’s not the same as her physical presence.

You jump for joy and drink freely knowing you won't have to wake up early.

In about 4 or 5 years when the attitude starts developing, you'll wish she'd still want to see her grandparents.

Think about how special it is for your child to have time to spend with their grandparents. Not all kids get that.

shite I wish I could find someone to take them all summer

Hell I loved spending a few weeks with the grandparents during the summer. Doing outdoor stuff with gramps and being treated like a king by grandma.
My folks were lucky if I bothered to call them once a week. This was the olden days though before cell phones and internet.

All summer? Damn. I'm lucky if my kids can spend 3 days at a grandparent's house.

By knowing she'll be getting to bond with her grandmother and making memories she'll cherish forever.
And also by knowing that mawmaw will be laying the wood if she gets out of line.

Thanks for putting this into perspective. It’s something I took for granted for sure. I was pretty much raised by my grandmother.

How far away are they and can you visit when you want?

Where can I sign up? Ours won’t even take both of our kids at the same time and they’re 12 and 14!

This is great for the kids. The importance of family and being a part of something is very important. It will help them down the road. Now are her parents crazy and going to be talking crap about you? Or will this actually improve your relationship with them and piss your ex off by her parents knowing she is bat shite crazy and dealing with you is easier?

I’m kinda surprised your ex agreed to this.
