Every year that passes I feel more like Peter from office space. I’m not miserable and don’t hate what I do by any means (finance role within commercial real estate), but at this point I couldn’t care less about advancing in my field / career.

I feel as though my interest and ambition peaked years ago and I’ve just been coasting ever since. I’m approaching my late 30s and wondering, is this it until I can retire or do I switch it up. Problem is I have no other interests in the professional world that I’m currently aware of.

Any of you baws feel the same way?

I like money. I'm always trying to climb another rung up the ladder.

Yes and we’re approx same age. Though I really want to change jobs and leave the client service side — I have reached the point of misery.

Maybe it's time for you to find a new gig dude. Living in misery every day is not a good recipe for your life......or marriage.

real talk...if you know how commercial real estate works, then:
a. get your broker's license
b. get a commercial construction license

First of all not everyone is interested in making their work their life and thats ok.

I consider myself quite ambitious and i still go through periods like that. I think shaking things up is important.

Just remember that what you do for a living doesn’t have to be your life. Do what you enjoy and let your income be the how, instead of the what.

Funny, I'm the same age and I'm just burnt out with working for the man, but like you, I have no clue what other viable job I'd actually enjoy doing.

Our company just got bought by a public company, and the amount of BS they make you go through is just a drain on your morale. I just want to go to work, write code, and not have to attend stupid meetings just to hear some non technical person have their voice heard and make themselves feel important. I certainly don't want to learn about DEI or BLM or any of the rainbow group.

I want to advance but everyone who has taken the position above me absolutely hates it. More hours, crazy amount of BS from ownership, only slight more money. So I'm good right now unless someone comes knocking with 25% compensation increase and better perks.

I'm likely going to look for opening elsewhere for the next step.

This is normal in mid-40's but in your 30's, that's too young to become the hateful miserable old fat frick that shoo's children off their lawn.

I'm right there with you OP. I'm 35, and I just have no real interest in my work most of the time. Doesn't suck or anything, pretty easy and chill at this point. I work to support my lifestyle, so that is important to me. I give a shite about doing my job to the best of my ability, I am reliable, and I hold myself accountable, and all that, but yeah, I need to find something else. I just have no fricking clue what it is I would want to pivot to.

Yup - 47 years old.

There really isn't another promotion for me here...so, do I just coast until I retire or leave for somewhere else?

I've been here 8.5 years and it would be better for my retirement to stay 10 years and 1 day. After than, we'll see...

I don’t like sales, but I’d hate a wage job 100x more. So whatever

Do you have a family, kids, etc? I’m a bit older than you with a wife and younger kids. My family is my priority and my job is just what I do to be able to fund the household, take the family on vacations to make memories with the kids, etc. I don’t particularly care about work beyond continuing to produce an acceptable work product to provide for my family. My happiness and identity is not dependent on my career.
