Grady Dick if he’s there at 14

Would be a solid pick

Grade A Dick cumming hard in the paint

Redundant to what we already have on the roster. We don't need another super lean wing, unless we trade one away, even if he is a great shooter.

I just don’t see Dick going past 12….but still that’s not bad.

Based on the teams that pick from 10-13, I think there's a fair shot he falls to 14.

You’re picking 14th and there’s plenty of established NBA contributors already on the roster. Redundancy is to be expected, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing when considering the salary cap implications of drafting a replacement for current rotation players.
Also, I’m much less worried about body type redundancy than skillset redundancy

Exactly. Who cares about body type redundancy… We’re one of the worst shooting teams in the league. There’s no way adding shooting could be redundant.

NBA is all about stockpiling wings. You really can never have too many 6ft 6 to 6ft 9 guys. Because you can technically play them at positions 1-5, depending on their skillsets.
G Dick is definitely more of a 2 or 3, but guys like Herb, Trey, and Ingram all have really good multi positional versatility.
If we draft G Dick, we could still upgrade at center via the Jonas and Nance contracts, as well as other future picks.
I wouldn’t be against the pick. I also doubt he is there at 14.

You are describing something different. It's not the height I care about. It's player profile and the way skills mesh.
Zion is our alpha player. We hoped that he can, on occasion, play the 5. That allows us to play 3 wings and a guard along with him. I don't believe that is an effective line up now. He needs a big with him. So that leaves three spots open. McCollum, Ingram and Murphy would be the those three. Then we have Daniels, Jones and Nance coming off the bench. I just don't see where an additional wing gets any minutes.

He measured well at the combine. About 6’8 with shoes and a 6’9 wingspan. Also came in at 204 lbs which is about 10 lbs heavier than what he was listed at Kansas. Good sign since I thought he was too thin at Kansas

There’s no player or position on this team that keeps you from drafting anything

there is no way both Utah and Indiana would pass on a white guy that can shoot and play like Dick.

My belief are that there are 15-20 draft eligible players that are capable of breaking a two deep rotation on a NBA team. If we are drafting #14, I think we can find a player to fill an immediate need or trade it for a player that can. If we are drafting a player based on talent or the ability to fill a future role (project), then I think that would be a waste and I struggle to see a spot on the roster. Plus it is possible to find those later in the draft, if you lucky or have great scouting (Alvarado, Jones, Lidell..).
If we took Dick, barring injury, I don't see him playing more than 12mpg. That is if he can take those minutes from Marshall, who is in a contract year. I don't want to take a late lottery guy and sit him (ala Lewis).
Also, fit matters to a players development. I was huge on Suggs before he went to the Magic. He has been a bust due to erratic playing time and a toxic culture. There has to be a plan in place to incrementally elevate a young player. Stockpiling similar players is a recipe for disaster (Raptors)..

draft picks sit b/c they aren't good.
When they are good, they play, regardless of who else is on the team.

yeah, uh huh.
That's why he started a 2nd round pick the first game of the season last year.
and that's why Trey Murphey played in 34 of his first 36 games before finally getting some normal mid year rookie time off to see what he needed to improve upon, which he did.
and why Dyson played in 59 of the 70 games he was available to play in, getting 18mpg in those 59 games despite being putrid on offense for most of the season.
Yeah he tends to take some time to gain trust from rookies and likes to play vets over them

This a good rule of thumb but fails in some situations. Our wing depth is good enough that when healthy can you really expect a non star rookie to crack the rotation? I don't think so.
If we drafted another Trey, maybe. But if we drafted another Dyson or Herb, who would they really beat out as a rookie other than Naji? Naji shouldn't get minutes if the team is healthy which would mean a rookie wing wouldn't get minutes.
On the flip side, if we draft a center in the first like Lively or Nnaji and they aren't part of the regular big rotation after the All Star break, they are either injured or it's a red flag that they might not be future starter material.

quote:While I do not think Kira deserved any benefit of the doubt and likely did not earn his time, Willie has shown a stubbornness to play the rookies. Murphy took WAY too long to get playing time even when the team was struggling. Daniels got a lot of trash minutes for a while before Willie realized that at least his defense was worthy of some time on the court. If you recall, Graham was getting minutes over Daniels. What does that say? Jones showed a lot and there was a need to fill the starting lineup (other options were Murphy or Marshall. Heck, Graham and NAW were starting at the time).
