Unfortunately you can’t really assume that about anyone in the pen.

I think I would have went batter by batter with Floyd first off. He was at 103 pitches. So maybe 1 or 2 batters if they were quick outs. If anyone got on base I would have went with Coleman or Guidry depending on where they were in the lineup. I can see why he brought in Hurd because of his last few outings have been good in that spot. Face it we are way short on pitching due to injuries and lack of development by Wes Johnson. Our bull pen has gotten worse and not better the last 6 weeks. No one has stepped up after Edwards and Shores went down.

I dog this guy a lot but he seriously makes me nearly shite my pants when I see him come into tight games. Lately it feels like he's always the first one JJ wants to grab and I can't for the life of me see why.

Most frustrating thing is how awful Cooper’s been yet Jay continues to use him like it’s 2021 and 2022 like he’s been serviceable and not awful.

Unfortunately the same is true of every other bullpen arm. He still has a better conference ERA than Ackenhausen, Herring, Coleman, Little and Hurd. At least he’s throwing strikes.

He has a habit of leaving pitchers in WAY too long when everyone except JJ knows it.

But but the other threads say he took Floyd out too early. I'm so confused.

Simply shows how bad this pitching staff is, overall, after Skenes and sometimes Floyd. This staff will never get the Tigers to Omaha if they don't drastically improve in a week! Look out tomorrow and at Georgia next weekend!

Like Smoke’s Billy Sadler in 2002 CWS. Never was consistent yet Smoke kept going to him and promptly exited Ohama 0-2.

This could apply to every pitcher not named Paul. Hurd still gets the call.

When the bats get back going and they will, this team can win a regional with you pitching

Saving arms for Sunday. Lose Sat or Sun was the choice.

The guy is a great coach. Defense and pitching are not his strong points

That wind up in the bleachers. Our choices can't be endless walks from Little & Co. or BP fastballs. Someone besides Skenes and Floyd has to be able to paint a corner or induce a swing and miss. Right now we don't have that, and it cost us a series last weekend, and if the bats don't come out hot today, it will again.
I would rather have thrown our best remaining arm (Guidry?) for two innings last night with a two-run lead that have to piece together 9 innings today from the shitastic grab bag we have left.

Hurd has been solid lately outside of last night. I get the logic of going to him in that situation. Just didn’t work out.

How can you argue against going hurd there? He has been great doing that job for the last few weeks

You can’t argue against going Hurd there but you have to see he didn’t have his stuff. There wasn’t one swing and miss, they were barreling the balls up. Then you have to have someone besides Cooper in the pen in that situation. It was a 1 run game with 2 runners on nobody out and he is know to get shelled then settle down.

At some point you expect these kids to execute. Like Steve Kerr said after their loss, this is not a championship team!

Hurd looked like he had turned a corner. I have no doubt Johnson felt like he WAS the best arm available. This wasn’t a case of him trying to save arms. It was just another example of the unreliability of the bullpen. Guidry probably would have done better, but there’s no guarantee he would have preserved the lead either.

Msu has a pretty good hitting team - it’s still a tough loss

Is it time for Skip to sit down with Johnson and explain some of the nuances of managing pitchers?

This one is definitely JJ's weakness as it follows him around all the time.

Yep. He expects the team to be able to hit their way out of anything. Early in the season it worked and it masked some issues.
