Is he mediocre?

His front office is. The dumbest thing they could do is let Bridges and Johnson go for Durant and they went out and did it. That depleted their bench.

I don't really blame the front office. It's clear Ishbia wanted to make an immediate splash with that deal and probably said depth be damned.

They can retool their bench in the off-season. Didn’t the nets have a losing record post trade?

With minimum salary players. That won’t win a championship and anything less than a championship for them is a failure.

Monty and Willie are the same person. Great guys, great faces of the franchise, players love ‘em, and their X’s and O’s and game management leave a lot to be desired.
That being said, Denver was the better team and by a good margin, especially after the injuries. This series certainly should not be the reason any Monty decisions or opinions are formed.

They can sign some cheap vets but probably will have to wait in line behind a few other teams for those guys. Hoping to unload CP3 or Ayton for assets that will make them better seems like a difficult scenario right now.

Agree but getting blown off your home floor by halftime in elimination games the last two seasons is a very bad look.

It’s not great, I agree. But the players are human and I think they saw early they couldn’t pull this off. I’m not going to judge if people want to put that on Monty, that’s fine. I just put that way more on the players and the circumstance. No CP, no Ayton and Pope going off, 44 points in first quarter etc. They got boat raced and from the jump.

They didn’t trade for him for this year only. They get him for 3 more years. They knew they were gutting their depth for this season, but they will be much better next year with more better pieces.

Chris Paul is an old washed up pos. Devin Booker is a ball hog. Neither will ever win shite.

Last year’s Dallas series is why a lot of opinions are formed on Monty by Suns fans and NBA fans in general.
Losing badly to the Nuggets in an elimination game is understandable. But that Dallas team wasn’t nearly as good and did the same thing while Ayton and Monty were butting heads.

The new CBA limits their ability to do so.
Can’t use the MLE if you are in the tax. Can’t sign buyout guys if you are in the tax. The team with the highest payroll will automatically pick last in the first round. Anyone in the tax has to to 110% salary matching for trades instead of 125%.
Not IMPOSSIBLE to build a winner under those circumstances but having blown their load to get Durant limits their options of how to pull it off.

Curious how they work around the new CBA rules. It'll be interesting to see, that's for sure. I have to imagine they will shop Paul and try to improve their depth in the process.

YouTube pundits were floating that they move both CP3 and Ayton.
CP3 is a matter of clearing a lot of dead weight from the floor, cap wise, while Ayton is the kind of player who doesn’t really want to play third fiddle.
CP3 likely costs them assets to move, even with his final two years being non-guarantees.
Ayton likely brings in some role players and a first or two but any assets brought in by him may be then used to help move CP3.
I think the biggest problem for the Suns will be finding a deal they want to take for Ayton considering he isn’t worth what he should be after the last two years and teams know the Suns have limited options so they are likely to lowball them.
One deal mentioned was Dallas flipping some role players and a first for him (Klieba and someone else), thinking Dallas is a good landing spot for Ayton if he will be doing pick and roll with Luka plus being the focus on defense. Still doesn’t mean that Phoenix thinks they are getting enough for him.

My understanding is that these penalties will not take place until you hit the 2nd apron over the tax, so $17 million over the luxury tax threshold. You can still pay the tax and use the taxpayer MLE, etc. the suns can operate in this space with marginal cost cutting from this year
This CBA change does likely preclude the Suns from spending Warriors and Clippers type of payroll, which they potentially could have done.

Their roster for next year, provided they don’t cut anyone non-guaranteed, is paying $163m for seven players
That ain’t a lot of room to work with under the new CBA, as that is about $3m into the tax with multiple roster spots yet to fill (about $5m in unfilled roster charges).

BREAKING: The Phoenix Suns dismissed coach Monty Williams, sources tell ESPN. Williams was a two-time NBA Coach of the Year in four seasons with Suns — including a trip to 2021 NBA Finals. Suns lost 6-game series to Nuggets in Western Semifinals.
I bet he just moved up to #1 on the list to be Willie’s lead

Not surprised. B2B Blowouts at home is embarrassing. New owner would want his guy not the past ownership.
