It’s not how “quick” it can be done. This is how many hours a shop will charge you. Typically 2 people 15 to 20 hours for removal, reinstall, calibrating.

I know GM has had high failure rates with this ever since they implemented DOD/AFM.
Not familiar with the Hemi what so ever but out of curiosity, is it not possible to do a cam and lifter replacement or is the cost so high that a full engine replacement make more sense.

Don't throw good money after bad. Trade that bad boy in.
Everyone i know who had an engine swap has wished they'd have just traded. Exception being a Jeep or some type of classic vehicle.
You're essentially putting $10k in a 10 year old truck. you still have almost 10 years/200k miles on every other part of the truck. And no offense, It's a Dodge.

Upwards of 4k once you send the heads in to get checked/reworked. I've read that once the cam grinds down some the metal flowing through the rest of the engine--even flushed after cam swap--pretty much does it in in short order. You have to catch it very early and I saw some "glitter" in the oil on the last change...basically to late.
The truck has been flawless up until this point and has done all I asked of it...I just plain like it. I'll decide soon enough.

I really like my truck too. Have driven it since new. 2002 Chevy with 360k miles. I have been thinking about engine / transmission swap too. Might stop by Kand M auto in BR and get a price. Online says they do Jasper engines. If I find anything out I will post back.

I’ve done this once
replaced a 302 in a bronco with a reman
I had the shop order the crate engine, take delivery, swap it out and return the core
much simpler engine and swap obviously but I feel like I got what I paid for, especially considering I had no way to take delivery, get the engine to a shop or return the old one

10k is nothing compared to comparative replacement cost of the overpriced crap out there. If 10k gets him 3 years of usage and he’s left with a more valuable vehicle than its current condition, you do it all the time.

The two times I paid to replace an engine, I’ve later regretted it. It just seems like everything starts to break afterwards. I will never do it again. Cut your losses.

Like I said before I had a few outdoor power and a fleet gas & diesel shop a few years ago.
We did engine replacement for fleet vehicles and it hit or miss. I cringed as it tied up too many labor hours and if things go wrong I lose money. Transmission swap is pretty quick and painless. You can replace reman or new engine where still have other hidden issues. Back then the cost use to be around the same price as an engine. On avg $10k to $12k.
It depends on the condition of the truck if you want to do it.
My nephew needed a truck.
Got 3 yr old Chevy with blown 5.3 dirt cheap.
He had the seats redone.
Sent rear end out to be rebuilt as that really didn’t cost much.
GM crate tranny, and GM crate engine.
Truck works fine and after this repair he has 157,000 on the truck.
It the luck of rolling the dice.

With the cost of new trucks I'd swap IF I could find someone who is reputable and willing to take on the project. So a few days of calling around or better yet going to talk to shops and see who's willing to do what.
If you went and bought a $15K-20K used truck there still wouldn't be any guarantee it wouldn't shite the bed 1000 miles down the road.
Just curious, what was your oil change interval? My mechanic says extended oil changes are why so many AFM engines fail.

I run my AFM engine to 10,000+ every single oil change. Every oil change I send the oil samples off to Blackstone for analysis and it’s always good to go.

Ram's oil change interval is 10k by the computer. I did it between 7500-10,000 using Mobil 1 full synthetic and good extended life filters.

The number of replies to this post from people who would simply trade it in or sell it and most likely not disclose the issues driving said trade or sell is a good argument for NOT buying a used vehicle for any reason....

I wouldn't buy a crate reman...
but I would take the long block to a reputable engine builder to have the lower end rebuilt and heads reconditioned and reassembled and bring back to the shop doing the work...make sure the shop knows and approves of the rebuilder choice and you should be good
Second this...if possible buy new, not remanufactured. Its substantially more money but far more likely to be a success, in my experience.

The couple times I have I've ended up with someone else's problem. I know financially it's a better move, but I don't do it anymore.
