Baton Rouge area. The truck still runs and drives it just has some issues that are going to become major. I'll have access to another vehicle for 3 months over the summer so seems like the time to get this done.

well the best solution is to let them get the engine for you, that way there are no excuses if there is an issue. if they get the engine they warranty it so there is no "well go talk to who sold you the engine"

might cost a couple hundred more than buying it yourself, but trust me, you dont want to give them any reason to tell you your SOL if something goes wrong

2014 RAM 1500...Hemi...174,000 miles. Showing all the signs of lifter/cam issue.

I gotta say, it seems like a stretch to put 10-12 grand into a truck that has issues at 170,000 miles.

Everything else is 9 years old on it. It’s gas engine so you got good life out of it.

Good luck with however things work out for you though.

Edit: sadly any new vehicle is a fortune , nearly criminal

given the price of new vehicles, it may be worth it to do this.

I have a 99 Silverado 1500, transmission crapped out during the most recent hurricane, almost 300k miles on it. Morris put a rebuilt one in for just over 3 grand, truck returned to active duty afterwards. Outside of that, the only thing I have done has been routine maintenance, a water pump, and one replacement of the injector spider assembly.

Will need to do the heater core eventually (I just have it disconnected for now, with the hoses running together. Given that we only REALLY need the heater for about a month each year, I'm dragging my feet on that).

10K would be a pretty good price for someone to furnish a crate engine and install it...steep, in my opinion, for a re-built engine no matter how good a reputation they have for rebuilding. Its a daunting task on new vehicles because the multiple sensors used to communicate with the computer can cause all manner of ill behavior if slightly damaged and can be almost if not impossible to trouble shoot. I grew up in a time and in a family where being at a junkyard when they open on Saturday morning to buy an engine and fine tuning the thing on Sunday to drive to work Monday was fairly common...I would be hesitant to take on a new vehicle engine swap. Many shops are hesitant because it takes up space when they could be burning and churning brake jobs and the like. If someone has told you $10K for a factory crate engine and have a solid reputation I'd give it some thought....cheaper than a new or even a used truck with the same mileage....

Very hit or miss but generally have decent warranties on the engine itself, in my experience. I had a fleet of trucks in the mid 90's through 2006 and Jasper was my go to fix. They would, at that time, sell to the general public...it is my understanding they only deal with authorized installers now. We did some both ways and had problems with some and some were as good as new and lasted a long time. The warranty, and it is decent, on the engine, was acceptable. They did not warranty labor, however, and unless the installer did something wrong the labor is out of pocket...or was in that time period.

One of my options was a Jasper installed locally...3 year or 100k warranty.

MDS deleted remanufactured engine...$11,900 total price.

I'm kind of in the rock/hard place in so far as to which way is best. Fix it or get what I can for it and buy new/used. New truck prices are ridiculous, 47k-106k, kind of insane.

Look into a GM crate motor

You could possibly get more performance and reliability

I wouldn't buy a crate reman...

but I would take the long block to a reputable engine builder to have the lower end rebuilt and heads reconditioned and reassembled and bring back to the shop doing the work...make sure the shop knows and approves of the rebuilder choice and you should be good
