Have had this for years. Magnesium supplement fixes it for me. My Dr recommended one called Bone Builder that I purchase online. Magnesium needs several other nutrients for proper absorption, so take a quality supplement. You get what you pay for.

I take 10mg of melatonin and sleep under a weighted blanket. It helps me with my RLS.

Go see a vascular specialist. You might have venous insufficiency. Pretty correctable in many cases.

I get it sometimes. Only thing I know that causes mine is Benadryl. In the past benadryl would knock me out. I learned this by taking it just before a long, nightime air flight. I took 2 to knock me out and it gave me the worst RLS I've ever had. Stayed up till 3am. Now I'm thinking a lot of sinus meds might cause it for me.
I'm gonna try some of yall's suggestions.

I have gotten it occasionally and not sure how bad it is compared to others. But I found putting some strong muscle rub cream on the area helps a lot. I would wake up and put some behind my knees and calves and it would go away for me to sleep. They got some stuff for horses that is basically a super strong muscle cream that probably would work even better. Its just a temp fix to distract you enough to fall back asleep, at least for me.

Legs moving before you fall asleep is a different diagnosis than legs moving while asleep. Treatments are different.

Sleeping pills aren't enough to overcome it either
Diphenhydramine HCL (benadryl and some sleep medicines) is a known cause of restless legs.

I used to have a mild form of this- usually just a weekly or monthly episode that would last a couple hours. I have zero clue if this is related, but ever since I cut down majorly on processed foods and drastically increasing my protein intake about 2 years ago, I haven’t had a single RLS event. Could have been coincidence. Also around that time I started taking a daily magnesium glycinate and vitamin D supp. Again, possibly coincidence possibly not.

Restless Leg Syndrome is caused by weak dopamine receptors. Go to the doctor. The process seems to be similar to Parkinson's. They will start you with gabapentin, which is an antiseizure med. Took me a couple of tries to get the right dosage. If that doesn't work for you, then you move up to a dopamine agonist like Requip. Those meds can cause compulsive behavior, which is why you try gabapentin first.

Henry VIII had this.

I used to get it pretty bad in my 20's but eventually it went away on its own. Hope that helps.

I have had RLS since I was a kid. I’m 45 now. I have used Mirapex for years, but it’s not generally considered the gold standard anymore. I’m still using it because I basically can’t come off without my body badly reacting. The Mirapex worked for years until about two months ago when it did not. My neurologist added gabapentin, and it has helped.
Those assume you have ongoing RLS. You could be low on iron as that can cause RLS. If you take medication, take it at about 8:00 at night. If you take it at bedtime, then the RLS has already started.
Some tips that work for me if it gets going, stretch your legs. I mean stretch them until they hurt. That can help. A hot bath can also help. Best of luck.

Try a weighted blanket. I had trouble sleeping 8 years ago and purchased one. Since then, no trouble going to sleep. I recommend them anytime I hear someone has trouble getting to sleep.

I took just a muscle relaxer for about 4 months, and it helped a little, but did not eliminate the symptoms. About a month ago I added potassium and magnesium asparate about an hour before bed with the muscle relaxer, and my symptoms disappear for the night. I sleep very well now, it has been a life saver. Good luck, and I hope this helps.
