re: What's everyone's thoughts on our basketball roster for next year so far?

Give me Joe Girard and Russell Tchewa, and I'll say we're considerably better off than last year and we'll have somebody who can plausibly fill all of the key roles on a basketball team.
Having said that, we're going to be too short at guard. We're not going to have enough athletic 6-5 to 6-8 guys who can defend, rebound and run the floor. We're likely going to lack a real Windex man on the glass, though Tchewa would help that some. I don't know who we'll have who can stop guards from driving the lane on us.
That's why, ideally and if possible, LSU could sign Abram and get Phillips to withdraw from the portal. Girard is a much more experienced player and a more consistent scorer, but Abram has more length and athleticism. At his best, he reminds you a bit of a left-handed Javonte Smart. I think you get more out of Abrams defensively. If you believe that LSU should be able to score with the new additions, a higher priority may be to find a defender.
Tchewa is a bit concerning because while he has the size, his rebounding and (especially) block numbers aren't incredibly high. He averaged 31 mpg in 30 games last season and had 8 blocks....total! To compare, Phillips had 7 blocks on the season and he only played in 20 games averaging 7 mpg. Given Tchewa will only have one more year remaining while Phillips has 3, I think the choice is easy.

So far...meh. Big splash yet to come? Not likely. So...meh. Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst.

Except Phillips is in the portal and taking visits to other schools and Tchewa is apparently visiting here.
Tchewa doesn't block shots, that's true, but he does alter them. And he gets nine rebounds a game, which is legitimate.
He gives you some of the inside defense piece.
If Phillips would come back it could help. I see zero reason for optimism that will happen.
As for Abram, looks like we're not getting him. We may have moved on to Battle and maybe it'll be Battle instead of Girard - and if so, that would give you some size at guard which could be helpful. Of course, does the shooting translate from the Big Sky Conference to the SEC? Dunno. It should translate from the ACC, which is why Girard's 38 percent from 3 should make him really attractive.

Kim has some holes to fill, but I'm optimistic.

I'm mildly optimistic. Talent level will be greater on offense if McMahon let's them run some and doesn't insist on walking it up the court and set up the big men every time.
Well, our best player was a big man so....
We tried pushing the pace at the beginning of the year. Matter of fact, even though we finished the season with a much much slower pace than we started, we still ended up 64th out of 354 teams in pace. He had to make an adjustment due to horrible guard play.
Did you ever watch the Murray State offense when Ja Morant played there? It was really fun to watch.

To the OP, I generally agree with Alt26 here. It's too early to tell what the entire squad is going to compose. We're bringing in some guards, which we need. Point distribution overall for the team could have quite a few guys in double digits. I do worry about the defense though.
I am curious how Coach Mc constructs the roster overall and the playing style during the season.
He easily did not give me confidence, but I gift him the benefit of the doubt. But 2-16 to 4-14 isn't going to work for me. I said it in another thread before - setting the bar so low season one doesn't give you a pass on season 2. If we're not sniffing NIT this upcoming season, then that's not on anyone but Coach Mc.

I think overall it's better on paper than the roster we had the previous season, but I'm not sure if its NCAAT or bust. Depends on how well our freshman developed and if returning upperclassmen like Fountain can truly lead the team.

He is still building but it looks like he’s changing his approach. These players are very different than last year. Boot up
