The Government Street saga continues.

The other night one of the local stations did a news segment on the medians. Apparently tgry are being damaged by vehicles and the landscaping looks like crap now.
Now the city admits the lane widths were shrunk because locals reviewing the plans wanted it that way. Now BR Business reports on the issues.
Now the city wants to lower the speed, and the city wants the state to fix everything before they take control of Government.
Traffic planning and design in BR is apparently in the hands of civic associations and local homeowners instead of engineers and homeowners. What was once a four land thoroughfare is slowly being reduced to a bike path.

WBRZ-TV recently reported that the medians were damaged and built 6 inches larger than the original plans called for, but Raiford contends that those plans were amended, approved and applauded by the business community and local homeowner associations in 2016, before he returned to city-parish government, and that the median islands were built larger to narrow the street’s lanes from 11 feet to 10 feet in an effort to slow drivers.
Now the city wants to lower the speed, and the city wants the state to fix everything before they take control of Government.

He says DOTD officials recently told him that it would take two weeks to fix the medians, with the goal of transferring ownership of the road by the end of the month. “I’m not accepting this roadway until the landscaping on the medians looks better,” Raiford says.

This is the city's central planning in a nutshell.
Imagine being able to frick up like this day in and day out and still have a cushy high paying job with great benefits.

Don't need to worry about lowering the speed limit. You can barely get over 30 mph at any given minute due to traffic.

Not surprised they built those idiotic median improperly.

In this before someone says "traffic moves so much better now".
Yeah, because so much has just moved to other streets. Hooray for moving deck chairs around on the Titanic!

I curse those mfers daily since I live in the garden district. The speed limit is like 40-45, but traffic moves at about 30mph in between red lights. I think half of my posts on TD are just me btching about Govt St while I’m waiting on the 4th light cycle at Govt/Acadian.

That was the stated goal so I’m not sure why people are surprised.
I don’t have a problem with Government St. and I travel on it everyday. The traffic isn’t bad comparably and the intent of the redesign was to make the whole area more business friendly given the absurd amount of money living around there.
And the redesign doesn’t even crack the top 10 of BR traffic problems.

Has the library downtown collapsed yet?

I saw a mini copper that hopped the curb on the median on Tuesday.
Little fricker was toast.

He is such a worthless piece of dung. The quicker he is forced to retire, the better for all of us.

That was their goal.
Now they will need full time maintenance to fix the medians and they will need landscapers year round.

No. There may be less vehicles using Govt, but traffic is WAY worse. It was illogical from the start.
The actual placement of the medians make no sense. Anyone with a brain knew the landscaping would go to hell, that was a given.

I can speak to this as someone who used to practice landscape architecture in the area and did a lot of municipal projects. Maintenance is the Achilles heel of all good designs. It is especially a problem in LA. Every time I'm back down there and check up on old projects, they a lot of times look like shite because nothing has been maintained. It's frustrating because we worked hard to make them as maintenance-free as possible, yet LA still manages to frick it up.

The Government Street road diet has to be one of the stupidest things this city has ever done. And for this city, that’s saying a lot.

Yep. I remember back when it started they all heralded the work as it was meant to slow traffic, force more drivers over to Florida Blvd, and make Government like Magazine Street in New Orleans.
Except, you can’t move the schools and businesses already located there that is the source of the traffic. Doh!
And the city is lazy for not maintaining the medians.
