UConn–San Diego State Final Delivers Record Low Ratings

As the culmination of a tournament marked by high-profile upsets, there was a notable lack of national buzz heading into Monday night’s men’s national championship game between UConn and San Diego State. The day after the Huskies cut down the nets, the numbers are in—and confirmed the pre-game expectations.
This year’s title game drew in 14.69 million viewers on CBS, according to ShowBuzz Daily, making it the least-watched men’s championship game in recorded history. That represents a 14% decrease from last year’s game between Kansas and North Carolina, which was broadcast on TBS, TNT and TruTV and drew in 17.05 million linear TV viewers.
The historically low ratings come on the heels of Sunday’s women’s national championship setting a new record for most viewers in women’s college basketball history. LSU’s 102–85 victory over Iowa was seen by 9.9 million viewers, with high-profile stars in LSU’s Angel Reese and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark fueling a high-scoring showdown that peaked at 12.6 million people tuning in.

It looks to me that the lesson here is that the least watched men's game still outdrew the most watched women's game. If the men were given the cushy 3:30 Sunday timeslot and the women were at 9:20 on Monday, those numbers would be a lot more lopsided.

Transfer portal is ruining college sports.
I expect the poor TV numbers will lead to less NIL money. But I'm probably wrong.

This is why football rigs shite for the P5 teams…

Everyone wants to see upsets and Cinderellas, until you get a title matchup like this one.

They don’t have to rig anything. The best G5 schools of the past 20 years (minus Boise State) are all in the P5 now

For me it started way too late and the actual game sucked. UCONN had a 10+ point lead basically the whole way. FAU would have been more competitive, they just choked it away

They seriously need to move the natty off of Monday.

I’ve lived every lower 48 time zone.
MST is the superior for sports consumption.

Monday night is fine. Tipoff needs to be by 8:00 though. No reason for it to be at 8:20.

Never understood why they did this. There is no other major sporting event going on during this time. No reason why they couldn’t have it on a Sunday at a late afternoon/early evening time slot.

Monday night at 9:20pm will do that.
It needs to be on a Saturday.

I couldn't believe they thought a 9:20ET tipoff was a good idea.
