Question About State Job Verbal Job Offer (UPDATE)

I applied for a job with the State of Louisiana and Friday after last, I received a verbal job offer which I accepted. Since then I've been waiting for the written job offer but it's going on almost two weeks. Does it normally take the state this long to email a written job offer?
Yes, I did call the woman that offered me the verbal offer, and she said they are working on it and when I receive the written that I will be able to receive a start date to put in my 2 weeks notice. Should I call HR of the agency I applied for or just wait it out longer?

Have you seen how long anything takes in this state?

Welcome to government work.

Yeah, government HR offices work at a snail’s pace. They’re probably waiting until they have a certain number of new hires so they can do one big orientation class.

Welcome to the state of bureaucracy.

If you're going to work for the State, you need to get used to the amount of time it takes to do just about anything. If this is your first government job, you need to manage your expectations. Government is slow and it does not function like the private industry. Don't call HR, just wait it out longer.

mine didn't take very long. Believe I had it the day after the verbal offer.

That sounds normal. A follow up email wouldn't hurt.

They could be waiting on one signature from some higher up, and sometimes they take their sweet ole times getting to something so beneath them, such as hiring new employees.

There are also often delays based on funding sources or headcount (has the person you are replacing left already or is it a retirement with a firm date) and some positions require civil service commission approval to fill, especially if the job is being reclassified or retitled.
So it really depends on the position and the agency and if there are any special circumstances around the position title or classification.
Long story long

Did they mention anything about a start date in the interview or verbal offer? Fiscal year ends June 30 - so it’s getting close to the point where some agencies elect to wait to on-board new people after July 1.
Not saying that’s the case - just something to consider.

Took me two months before I started my IT position with the state.
It takes a bit of time

Make sure you quit your current job before you receive the formal offer and also send money in the form of green dot gift cards to the hiring manager to secure your laptop and training you'll need.

Mine took a little while and I even had people 'rush' my application. Get used to things taking time.

It's a bureaucracy. There's so much red tape involved.
